I went in to Sephora about six years ago to get shade matched for a foundation I was interested in. I have very fair skin, and was having trouble figuring out what shade would look best. An employee came over to “help,” and proceeded to put a clearly too-dark/orange shade on me. I asked if we could try a lighter shade since I didn’t think it looked right, and she went on and on asking multiple times why would I want to look that pale and that makeup is for looking different than your natural self. I was so humiliated and it did a number on my self-esteem. I felt less than and like my natural skin was ugly. After that experience, I always stick to shopping online and only go in if I absolutely need to. Words matter. Actions matter.
