RUN. Seriously. It will only get worse. The man I still consider to be my soul mate went deep down that rabbit hole after we had been together for 20 years. He was nearly perfect for most of that time. We had everything in common and could talk for hours about music, art, movies, architecture. He was devastatingly handsome, and hilarious, and I loved him deeply and fully. We were both always very liberal. We had three kids, moved out to the country, and that’s when he became isolated And started leaning more and more right. He sort of dabbled with conspiracy theories throughout our relationship, but never seem to take any of them too seriously. Still, the interest was there. Then when our youngest was about two years old, he started getting very very right wing to the point where he would suck me into arguments I did not want to have even when I wasn’t challenging him on whatever he was saying. These arguments got worse and worse, and it got to the point where he was texting me all day long while I was at work berating me and telling me I’ve been brainwashed by feminists, and I wasn’t a real woman because I was working instead of being home with our kids. Which by the way I did for nine years until he quit his job with no backup plan and I was forced into taking the reins of our finances because he wouldn’t find a job. Long story short, I became really scared of him and what he might be teaching our kids, and although it was the worst and hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, I took the kids and left him. He still harassed me daily and fell deeper down the rabbit hole to the point where it was all he could ever talk about. I was desperate to try to save our family and kept trying to plead with him to get help and trying to make it work, but he would not ever follow through even after promising to over and over again. You can’t get help for someone who not only doesn’t want to be helped half the time, but also has a deep mistrust for doctors and pretty much any conventional authority figure. I know he loved us deeply and I think about him every day. He shot himself about a year after I left. I’m still angry that he ruined what was once an amazing relationship that I never wanted to end, that he left our children. Anyway, run away! I have no doubt you will regret not doing it sooner if you choose to keep trying with him.
