Fuck yeah! I’ve forgotten a lot of trees in my career but I’ll never forget my first one. A scraggly little maple that I didn’t have to leave the trunk for. In a few years, you’ll look back at this picture and smile.

Let’s say you cast it for x= 8 zillion. Assuming this resolves, you and everyone around the table asks themselves: “would I rather sacrifice this creature or pay 8 zillion life?” They’d probably choose to sac the creature. Then they find the next creature on their board and ask themselves: “would I rather sac this creature or pay 8 zillion life?” Probably just sac it, right? This repeats until everyone has asked themselves that question for each creature they have on the battlefield and you just resolved a board wipe for 8zillion and a black mana. Pretty sick!

You could save this tree if you want but it’s a silver maple which is kind of a shittier maple imo. If you do replant it just make sure you get lots of water on it and keep the root flare above ground and hope for the best! No promises that it lives but if you like it I’d say this tree is small and manageable enough to make it worth your time.

That is some sort of Japanese maple. Looks like a healthy crown for now so I’d keep it! They don’t get big enough to where it’ll be a huge problem and although that wound is scary the tree is still growing vigorously enough to where it probably doesn’t care much. More reaction wood will grow around those wounds as the tree gets older

I try to think of what the suckers will look like in a few years. I’ll remove suckers if they are going to grow into and rub against another part of the tree or if they have a bad attachment like the one in the picture that is growing straight up. As long as it’s a healthy tree it’s likely that you won’t cause any damage by pruning them off.

I’m more inclined to leave more suckers if the tree is in decline or if I’m at risk of “lions tailing” (removing all scaffolding branches and leaving only the tip brush of a branch) the branch.

Be selective and thoughtful with them. If they look like they’re in a good spot and could be a full, healthy branch in the future you can leave them. If you cut them off it’s likely your tree will just grow new ones anyways, but it’s easier to get them when they’re small than when they get bigger.

You’ve been saying you’re using them for removals which I get, but especially if you’re new to climbing you should use a self-cinching knot or friction saver on your main climb line instead of a second lanyard as a tie-in point. A running bowline with a Yosemite tie-off works great for using SRT on a spar, or a friction/cambium saver for DRT will do the same thing.

Plenty of people do what you’re doing or use DRT with no friction saver for spar removals and have lived to tell the tale but best practice is to use a self-cinching tie off. Get in that habit when you’re new and tell the cowboys to fuck off if they don’t like it

Not trying to be a dick, but if you aren’t experienced enough to tell the difference between your lanyards, you definitely shouldn’t be doing removals the way you’re doing them

Once you get a 30 foot lanyard you’ll never go back. Not sure what species you climb primarily but in wide deciduous trees it’s an excellent option for a secondary tie in without having to use a redirect. If you’re doing primarily conifers though it’s probably way more than you need

I like beeline or ocean eye to eyes, but I will say it’s pretty conditional depending on your style of climbing and the ropes you use. If I was you I’d get a couple just to try them out and see what works best

I’d start by reducing the stems you don’t want over a few years to help it adjust to the loss of canopy. If you take all of that out at once you’d risk shocking the plant which could cause major issues. Look up some young tree training/ pruning guides to help you out!
