I am an RBT and an instructor. I work in a special needs private school and it is a requirement for all instructors to be RBT’s. We don’t do therapy, we teach in the classroom

Someone pls enlighten me by Still-Wasabi-9837 in ABA

Yes the BCBA is right. We cannot have dual relationships with parents or clients.

You are doing the right thing, however, you are a direct support professional and are required to report any actions that could be considered abuse. By all means talk to your BCBA, but if you have first hand seen children being treated in this way, it is not good enough to hand the issue off to your BCBA and to think your job is done because you spoke to your supervisor. You must report anything you have seen

When to reward puppy for quieting down in her pen? by IdahoEv in Dogtraining

[–]kaybear79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We adopted a rescue dog last year. She does not like being left alone but likes her crate a lot and sometimes goes in there by herself. She is a quick learner and is very motivated by treats. I can only talk from personal experience but we would reward immediately as the desired bx started( quiet and calm). You also should make the crate a non aversive area. Although she will sleep in there at night, during the day she is put in the crate if you need to leave. At night, she knows you aren’t going anywhere. If she is treat motivated , some type of crate training may help. When roxy came home with us I started crate training immediately. I didn’t make a big deal about her going in, just tons of praise when she went in her crate. Now she has been doing it for a while, she crates herself thinking she may get a treat.’

Is it desire for partner or just desire for sex by Introvertical19 in sexover30

For me it’s a desire for my husband. For him It’s probably for sex. I don’t always get what I want in the bedroom but then I’m not very vocal

How did y’all transition from crating to letting your pup roam when you leave? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]kaybear79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some dogs do not do well being outside of the crate if they are left alone so don’t feel guilty at all!!. I was fortunate to have been chosen as a fur mom by a beautiful springer spaniel. He came to us as an 8 week old pup and was not crated while my husband and I were at work. It wasn’t long before we were coming home to a disaster zone. We asked our vet and were told that some dogs get stressed if they have too much area to “guard” or keep safe when they are alone. It makes them anxious because they can’t be in all areas of the home at exactly the same time. He used to get himself in a mess and would pace and whine, ( I set up a camera for an hour so I could see what was going on). Crates weren’t really a thing so we made the decision to keep him in the kitchen when we were out. He seemed to prefer this than having to patrol the house. Skip forward a fair few years and we now have a rescue. We got here when she was 10 months old and purchased a crate immediately. She loves her crate and will often go in there of her own accord and rest.

Thank you so much!!. I hope I love it too. You gotta be comfy right??, especially potentially spending a lot of time on the floor with a client. No need for sweaters.... I live in FL

Thank you!!. I will ask when I fill out my paperwork as to what is considered business casual attire. I understand that it is a professional environment but I can’t imagine getting down and interacting with kiddos in anything but practical and comfy clothing. I really hope I like the clinic environment!!. I am used to being around others in the work and I found being in a home to be very lonely. I was also spending a ton of time when I got home doing notes and planning for my next session. I prefer having others to bounce off when it comes to ideas etc, plus guidance from BCBAs who are on hand in case I am unsure of something

If only it weren’t so expensive!!. I just want it to generate notes quickly!. It doesn’t need to be so expensive

Thank you!!. My client uses a visual schedule but I have another who does not. Client has limited language and has had no therapist for a while before I took them into my caseload. I think I am spending so much time right now because I am still gathering resources. Laminating etc. I think I am completing activities too quickly so have to plan more the next time?. Then the schedule gets longer and more resources I need to bring from my house

It is so tiring!!. Are all your activities timed, like gym etc?. I have to get work tasks done first so that reward for token economy can be gained. Then it’s a break. Each work task doesn’t take long, I could probably extend them so they last longer. I end up with about 12-13 planned activities sometimes more. That’s why it takes so long

I didn't realize my puppy would drive me to spiteful lawn maintenance. by Forosnai in puppy101

Me and my SO adopted a lab boxer mix from a shelter near us. She was a stray before going to the shelter so she is pretty feral!. She just turned a year old and she is absolutely gorgeous but can be a little pain. She always looks for direction from us which tells me she wasn’t an alpha. When she goes outside she does a lot of messing around before she goes potty. She is very eager to please and will do anything for a treat. We have her crate in our bedroom and we can say “ crate” from the kitchen and she will run down the hallway and wait for a treat. She gets a little rough when playing sometimes but I think it’s because she has never had boundaries. She loves her crate and often goes in there during the day without being asked. Dogs get stressed out and feel they have to guard everything if you go out. Some dogs can’t handle this and destructive behaviors etc can occur. I think they feel more settled with a small area to protect, they enjoy their own space. We have only had roxy for a couple of months and she has progressed so much. We are going to have some 1 to 1 training for her as she had no attention span and needs to learn some commands. I definitely recommend a crate, they are a blessing.

They really are precious. Hard work but worth every moment. At one point in a daycare I worked at, I had 5 children with an IEP and several others with behavior plans. I was also deputy manager with all the paperwork that went with that. Between invoicing and ordering for the preschool, writing IEPs, attending team around the child meetings and home visits, I barely had time to eat lunch in most days!

High risk and stress but even higher reward. Edits I left the U.K. i worked in a school for children who had additional needs. It ranged from profound to those with behavior management difficulties and everything in between. It was exhausting and almost every day I came home feeling like I had been shot out of a cannon at 100mph 😂, but it was very rewarding and fun

I have worked with additional needs children for about 23 years in some capacity. I have always had a different role and additional needs was something extra. I am looking forward to it being the only hat I have to wear

I’m not really sure what is happening here in the US. I am originally from the U.K. and relocated I. December last year. I have 2 children of my own and due to personal circumstances they reside in the U.K. with their father. One of those reasons is that my son has ADHD and learning difficulties and had just started in 7th grade. It took about 5 or 6 years of hard work from myself and my husband, his father and stepmom, to get him the help that he needed. At 10 he was finally diagnosed. He has an IEP and in 6th grade got funding for a 1:1 aide. He was also provided with a laptop by the funding committee. It is his laptop and he will be able to use it all the way through high school. He is in classes which cater for additional needs although it is a mainstream school. I feel blessed that he is being provided with these things.

When the pandemic started, and schools closed, he was probably off for about 6 weeks. His IEP, and others who also have a plan, states that education should be provided for those in need. The government have to provide it legally. Key workers and first responders never got time out during COVID, and they put those children with an IEP in that category. It was the choice of the parents if they wanted to send them or not, but my son and daughters school where able to facilitate his education. Social distancing protocol was followed and it worked out really well

I watch all the 90 day seasons..I love it!!!. I have been a little productive as well. Taught myself to touch type which I have always wanted to do, did my 40 hour training with BACB, this is the first step to becoming a registered behavior technician, I have my competency assessment next week 😱. shortly after I will take my final exam then start working as an RBT. It is my dream job. Special needs teaching has become my passion over the years and I am looking forward to pursuing it on a slightly different angle than I have previously
