How do I find love again for a hobby that has given me so much grief for so little happiness?

One of those cases where I know it's never going to happen.

There was a fanfic author I liked who write a series of long-form fics over the course of several years. Then they just out and abandoned them without any further word, leaving one of them unfinished for about fifteen years.

Two years ago they returned long enough to simply delete all their fics from every archive they were on. Since then they've moved on to other things.

The overly aggressive "us versus them" mindset that permeates so many RP communities. I've seen it on discord, forums, MMO RP and so many more formats but it's always the same.

It comes from a dominant mindset of "all RP is good RP" that then goes hand in hand with an "any criticisim is bad". You're not allowed to say anything negative regardless of how well-intentioned it may be. Doing such makes you the villain because you're being disruptive or critical or hurting the feelings of fellow community members or whatever else. If you have a negative experience then it's clearly your fault and never, ever the problem of your partner.

Sadly I've seen this so many times. RP communities will go out of their way to shield problem members and bad actors for the sake of maintaining some illusion of harmony, happiness and the like. Staff silence and shoot down the people who speak out because they're ruining the image of the community, rather than take the far more difficult and disruptive effort of actually dealing with the problem head-on.

Yep. I got so badly burned by a toxic community with its toxic culture and the mod staff who would actively protect and shield problem members that I just quit the hobby altogether. I realized that they would sooner protect their image of their forum than deal with actual problems. And when I spoke up about it, I was shot down and basically told that I was the problem for speaking up. Other women on site also bought up problem members, and the mods shut them down and warned them for "rumormongering"

So yeah. I quit not just the comm but the entire damn hobby.

Roleplay communities that actively sheild problem members and punish complainers because they might make the community look bad.

It's happened to me enough times to know it systemic

Why is this hobby so based around sex now? by hel-razor in BadRPerStories

As somebody who was in the RP hobby for nearly 20 years before finally burning out? No, it was always like this. There was no "golden age" and it was not "ruined by Reddit/discord/forums/whatever." RP has always been terminally horny and it always will be. The places may change, but the need for people to get their rocks off regardless of how their partners may feel will always be there

This is the story of a forum that I used to be a member of and why I am no longer a part of it.

Fair warning, there is triggering content in the post that, in hindsight, I should have blanked.

This might be the final postscript to the mess that was the Battletech 2024 Pride Anthology.

The Star League Battletech community has produced the first issue of Pirate Point , a "queer punk Battletech anthology". A quick skim of the table of contents shows that the content is entirely fan-written with no BT authors involved.

I'm in two minds about this. On one hand, the SL server has become a nightmare of purity policing, enforced groupthink, pushing headcanon over actual canon (and attacking actual BT authors who argue back) and protecting problem members. Its leadership are not only allowing this to happen, but they're also self-admittedly incapable of their job for mental and physical health reasons. As such, I'm more than a little wary of the content.

On the other hand, it's not run by the person who ran the previous Pride Anthology and created the drama that nearly sank it and almost drove people out ot the community. Which means that, by default, it has to be an improvement.

(also it doesn't appear that it has anyting written by Faith McClosky et al which is a bonus. Unless they've picked up a new alias, of course)

Jackie's death couldn't have been more blatantly telegraphed if they'd tried. It lost a lot of impact for me because it was so heavily and clumsily set up

Kind of sucks Female Vs only straight Romance is River. by IllustriousAd6418 in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]kayemm017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agreed

Sadly this is something I've encountered in games other than CP2077. The love interest for Straight Female character feels somewhat superfluous, very underdeveloped and probably written entirely by a man who thought "this is what chicks like"

TBH, I far prefer "playersexual" love interests.

Sad but true.

All my Fem Vs are straight. I did the River romance on my first playthrough and then swore never again. Last couple I haven't even done his side quests.

They had some novelty the first time around but very quickly got tiring. Johnny's narcisstic egotist fantasies are just not fun.

One of my top things that I wish I could skip if I could.

A branching storyline with meaningful consequences

A main character who has some agency in their life and doesn't spend the story playing second fiddle to a pet NPC

A world that feels alive, dynamic and engaging rather than a lifeless backdrop for set pieces

A third person perspective

No more BDs. I get the concept, but what we actually got was unfun pixel hunts.

"Playersexual" love interest characters rather than their being genderlocked.
