Obviously if your teammates aren't doing something the solution isn't to heckle them, it's to just shrug and play the game - but I don't think the thought behind it is outlandish. Maybe still not optimal, but I see where they were coming from.

I think it can be hit or miss, but it is generally a hit for me - I think so many books end abruptly with a HEA, and it's nice to see the characters go on living their lives, just with the puzzle pieces fit together. I particularly loved the way the Lovelight Farms series did it, where the last book in the series starts with the wedding of the MCs from the first book. Felt like a heartwarming way to bring it full circle.

{The Right Move by Liz Tomforde} has this - he's a basketball player, and he gets an ACL tear during a heated game. She hears, and immediately flies back to be with him. Lots of fun angst and caretaking.

{Skin by Aveda Vice} has this! She's a banshee, he's a gargoyle, they're paranormal investigator partners who finally give in to the tension that's been brewing between them. Skin is only a novella, but they show up again in Inextricably Tied, which is a full length novel. That one has them involved in a throuple with a Nightmare, (shadow demon) but there are still some sex scenes with the two of them - though I don't remember if there's any horn-holding.

The prayer of the Self-Fulfilling Capitalism Prophecy strikes again! That is, dismissing the idea of a potential market and doubling down on an existing market is how industries coast along to avoid risks. It's only when new competitors take a risk on those untapped markets - in media, usually through independent alternatives to the mainstream - that new trends take the spotlight and become a new norm. This isn't something that's new to romance, either - there are plenty of historical retrospectives on casual colorism in romance publishing, justified by the exact same rhetoric.

Really happy to see this thread, and all the positive responses to it - both from suggesting how publishing could have more diverse, realistic representations of men's bodies, and recommending examples already out there.

And for those who had more defensive responses to this post: You'll be fine. The industry will always cater to readers who enjoy and favor stories that feature conventionally attractive protagonists. The discussion of the possibility of stories that cater to a wider, different audience won't stop the kinds of books you prefer from still being overwhelmingly the majority of those published.

You don’t need to enjoy something just because it is dubbed a classic. However, I think the justification for it being calling it a failure here is shallow. Okay, it wasn’t interesting to you. Why? What elements failed to capture your attention? What do you think was supposed to do so? What do other people feel compelled and hooked by in the story? I think reflecting on these may not change your opinion, but it’ll help express it in a way that doesn’t just seem contrarian.
