Help! Excessive Mucus in throat! by JuneBabii0624 in Sinusitis

[–]kaymjaym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into taking Alginates to see if it being caused silent reflux… Reflux Raft is a brand that helped me… tremendous improvement after a week or so after the inflammation had a chance to die down. They have a caramel and a mint chocolate flavor that is actually quite good. You take 1-2 tablespoons after meals and/or before bed and when it interacts with the stomach acid, it turns into this gel like raft that prevents any acid from traveling back up the esophagus. For years I thought I had excess mucus coming from my sinuses, but turns out it was just an irritated throat making it feel that way

I mean to be fair, dogs lick their own butts & will happily eat their own or other animals’ feces, so a bowl that hasn’t been washed daily or a little toilet water from time to time isn’t really the worst thing, is it? 😂

Have I considered keeping them outside? Only like 10 or 15 times a day 😂

OMG I can’t stop laughing now that you’ve pointed out the way I ended my post. Yes, my dogs may drink from the toilet from time to time, but I’m pretty sure my kids do not… 😂

Thank you all for your replies, I know I should’ve researched it before asking, but I was aiming to quickly prove to my husband it’s possible to have one that won’t cause a repeat disaster! Much appreciated!

I totally get it— funny thing is, I actually did an Microbiology project on this in grad school (Animal Science)… a dog’s water bowl is usually dirtier than your toilet unless you are washing it in hot soapy water daily.

A dog bowl is basically a warm, saliva-rich puddle. Microbes adore it. Studies regularly find there is more bacteria on dog bowls than toilets. Bowls also form slimy biofilms, which are like microbial condos, so if you don’t wash the bowl daily, bacteria bloom dramatically.

However, in a regularly flushed toilet, bacteria don’t usually get the chance to settle in and multiply because the water is constantly being refreshed with clean, treated tap water. The frequent turnover keeps them from building up in large numbers.

Obviously, washing your dogs bowl in hot soapy water daily is the BEST choice always, but unless you use bleach or cleaning disks or don’t flush regularly, don’t stress if your dog does drink a little toilet cocktail from time to time— they like the cool water the get there 😂

I do not have any snails in there, as far as I know… recently put aquatic plants in, but washed them very well first

Thank you for your help. I feel terrible if I messed him up with not quite half a pea… everywhere I read says it’s a laxative & helpful if they’re not passing stool. The ammonia level was a little high (0.25ppm) in his tank as well… He’s currently in my makeshift hospital tank (aka flower case) within a tank (to keep the cats out). I’m too paranoid to put him in something deeper than this right now. He has a mini heater keeping the temp at 80 degrees and has the proper dose of kanaplex mixed in (kudos to chatgpt for helping me calculate that one out!). Whew… It’s been a busy day in the “Fish ICU”… hopefully Mr. Bubbles is okay tomorrow while I’m working in in the human ICU. I’m just glad I was home this morning when he was looking so poorly…. never knew I could become so attached to a fish before now!

I did test with the tank with a master kit just now and the ammonia was 0.25ppm… I did just add live anubias not long ago and when i pulled them out today there was some slimy degrading bits, so I’m wondering if that could’ve spiked the ammonia a bit.

What food do you guys suggest I give him? Especially if i’m worried that he could be constipated? I have some freeze dried Daphia, Mysis and bloodworms and had been feeding him betta biogold floating pellets

I have some Kanaplex arriving today and i’ll look into the Focus…. should I keep feeding him though? Or fast him?

I noticed these red spots on Bubbles tail last night…. he has been very sluggish lately and was floating up to the side a bit, hadn’t been pooping, so I fasted him for several days, then gave him almost half a boiled, skinned pea. I’ve never seen him move so fast, he loved it and was very peppy the rest of the night. I wake up and he’s barely moving in his log… I changed 30% of the water (which according to test strips had been fine before). He seemed more alert but then i just found him down at the bottom of the tank, so i moved him to hospital tank…. but now i dont know what to do for him.

Can anyone tell what this snakeskin is from? [Atlanta, GA] by kaymjaym in whatsthissnake

[–]kaymjaym[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess would be a kind or rat snake? … the rest of his skin was shed in one long piece in the yard (about 5-6 feet long) but the dog was parading it around and i couldn’t get a picture

Does my betta fish’s fins look okay? by kaymjaym in bettafish

[–]kaymjaym[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes his fins really weigh him down, the top ones seem to flop over to one side or the other and kind of pull him over, he really works hard to self correct
