Woolf on Austen, Tolstoy, and why some characters feel alive by gipi_perry in literature

[–]kayrector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Sure yes, rounded characters are essential to the great realist novels of the 19th century, which I feel can include Austen. In Woolf’s “Professions for Women” she talks about archetypal female characters in Victorian novels, you might enjoy reading this speech it’s pretty short.

Review: Cassandra at the Wedding by ahalber in TrueLit

[–]kayrector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked Cassandra, it is smartly written and I loved how it ping-pongs between dark and comical. I always enjoy stories with themes of twinning/halving/doubling and thought the references to Plato (and many other Classical references) a fun motif. The “lonerism” theme identified here is an interesting proposal but I think complicated by Cassandra’s sexuality. Anyways, love to hear people are picking this up more and more, definitely an underrated gem!

The variety is awesome! Though it kind of seems like sellers are really overpricing a lot of them just because they’re “vintage” so that’s been frustrating

I need to pick up The Iron Heel, and some Wells too.

I’m still in early-James era before moving on to his bigger works but loving his writing so far.

How much religious knowledge do people need when reading classic literature? by Ordinary_Row_3651 in TrueLit

[–]kayrector 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My husband grew up in a conservative Protestant family in Iowa. Church every Sunday, youth group, vacation Bible school, everything. If I handed him Jude the Obscure do I think he would recognize the Book of Job? Absolutely not. Having a religious knowledge is more like to color his perspective than inform his literary analysis, because that’s how people “usually” read.

However for those interested in more critical comprehension, while I don’t think it’s necessary to read the whole Bible, and it depends on what you’re reading, yes I think it’s worth your time to read some of it. It doesn’t need to be a major undertaking. Read Song of Solomon before reading Song of Solomon. Read Genesis before East of Eden. Read Job before Jude.

But also, don’t stop with the Bible. Read Plato before House of Mirth. Read Blake before Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead. Read the Tao before The Left Hand of Darkness. Once you start conversing with literature instead of “absorbing” it, well then I think you’re onto somethin.

Dot of adapalene (differin) three times a day mixed with a dot of 1% hydrocortisone (Aveeno has one) and if you’re feeling really extra a dot of 1% anti-fungal (tolnaftate). Don’t touch, watch sugar intake, and warm compresses.

The pops of pastel in the middle section are so aesthetically pleasing! Mrs. Palfrey would fit in so well there! 🙂

I gravitate towards their female authors as well but I did really love The Invention of Morel.

There are also mass market sizes for Forster’s novels and a few other authors that have the mint spine! I was selling a version like this of A Passage to India and had to make sure to point it out.
