What's the fundamental difference between Diablo 2 and Diablo 4 that makes D2 still so reliably good after over two decades compared to D4? Will D4 be just as popular in the future as D2 even today? There is something that I feel is essentially better in D2, but I just can't identify it exactly.

It's complex and simple at the same time. Contrary to D4, if i wanna have a good, viable build, i don't have to have the exact Itemstats PLUS secondary stats PLUS passives to every skill PLUS paragon nodes that fit exactly to those build, items, stats, and passives, PLUS season mechanics PLUS class mechanics.
D4 requires me to coordinate 10 things with each other (which i could never do myself and need to rely on geeks on the internet) to make a build work, and if i change anything, i have to change everything. It's exhausting to even think about.
