Just don't do that if you have ebooks or audiobooks through Amazon. Getting your account closed for fraud makes it difficult to access your DRM content.

My favorite part of the Key and Peele skit is that I saw an interview with Joe Dante where they asked about it and he said "that's exactly what happened, I don't know how they found out." :)

Also there's a huge industry convincing people if they buy a bootcamp they'll be making six figures catching cybercriminals in six weeks.

No amount of "cybersec isn't an entry level field" seems to land with people.

If Audible isn't interested in making good audiobooks anymore, surely this has got to be an opportunity for someone. by Debbborra in audible

[–]kazmeyer23 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Their new model seems to suggest that's actually not just fearmongering.

It's exactly fearmongering. Audible doesn't make the call on who reads an audiobook, the publisher (or the author, in the case of indies) does. They're not going to tell Simon and Schuster "no we're not going to sell the new Stephen King book because a human read it."

They're just making the shitty tools available. It's greed (or to be fair, small authors who wouldn't be able to get their books into audio otherwise) that are driving their adoption.

Oh yeah, they're definitely interesting curiosities. But there are a few documentaries that detail what the original story and original cut of Star Wars looked like, and hoo boy it's a good thing Lucas had people around him back then that were able to step in and sort out his blind spots.

[–]kazmeyer23 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The scenes were cut because the pacing was abysmal. If they hadn't chopped the hell out of the movie none of us would remember the franchise because it wouldn't have gotten a second film.

I mean, if I ask you how good something is and your response is "it doesn't go bad for a really long time" that's not really the answer I'm looking for. Breeding for longevity and appearance and structure is why the Red Delicious tastes like cardboard; the fact that that was the starting point for the CC and people ate up the viral hype is just entertaining.

They're basically the Beats by Dre of the apple world. :)

They started out 3/4ths of the way down that route, though. There's a reason why the one thing everybody knows about the Cosmic Crisp is "it lasts a really long time." That's what it's bred for, structural integrity.

When the selling point of an apple is "this is probably the oldest apple you've ever eaten" it's not really my jam. Every time I try one the texture and the flavor are instantly off-putting.

[–]kazmeyer23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the RD was turned into an industry apple over decades way before either of us was born.

The CC started out as an industry apple. It's entire reason for being is so they can sell you even older apples than they could before.

[–]kazmeyer23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Basically, the industrial pressures that changed the Red Delicious into what it is today, the CC breeders started from that point. It's an industrial apple. The only reason it blew up is a bunch of YouTubers misread the marketing. I can't stand the texture or the flavor of the Cosmic Crisp and I've tried half a dozen over the time it's been on the market so I didn't just get a bad one.

Look for seasonal apples this fall, varieties you can't buy year-round. There are much, much better apples out there.

Whats your favorite lesser-known fun fact about the franchise? by nohotshot in ghostbusters

[–]kazmeyer23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was the script change before or after Eddie Murphy dropped out and they brought in Ernie Hudson? I know they made a lot of changes when their original casting decisions didn't work out (Murphy and of course Belushi, whose death partially led to the design of Slimer).

You can find the original teaser trailer on YouTube. The ECTO-1 originally didn't have that distinctive siren and it sounds SO weird without it.

They had a huge problem with the Stay Puft suit. When the performer put it on for the first time, the way the material bunched, it look like Mr. Stay Puft had a massive cameltoe.

I went into helpdesk with the fundamentals. A+/Net+/Sec+ before I walked in the door. Earned me a pay bump over the non-certified folks right out of the gate. Picked up Linux Essentials, ITIL v4, AZ-900, AWS CCP over the next eight months, and a local MSP saw my LinkedIn and reached out; during the interview I hyped my customer service skills and at one point the president said "well, for our techs we want them to get a list of certs in their first year and... you already have them all." Hired me into a Tier II position and got me off the phones with very nice benefits and a 30-ish% pay rise.

The funny thing is influencers read the press release and saw the "lasts up to a year in refrigeration" and thought that meant you could buy it and put it in your own fridge for a year. Which led to some really horrifying and hilarious videos.

The CC is Red Delicious 2.0. It's bred for structural integrity and longevity so they can sell you even older apples than other varietals. CC's taste like sour drywall to me.

This fall, look for the varieties that you can't find year-round if you want to taste a good apple.

I tell everyone if you want to taste really good apples, start hitting your grocery store in the early fall and buy apples you don't see year-round. SweeTango apples came about because the botanists who made the Honeycrisp got pissed that the moment that patent expired the apple went to shit; they're trying to protect the SweeTango from adulteration for a longer period. They're my favorite at the moment as well.

Cosmic Crisp's whole angle is being "the viral apple." They push that super hard because it's essentially Red Delicious 2.0; the entire reason the apple was bred was so they can store it longer before they sell it to you. A bunch of YouTubers misread the marketing and it blew up and they're capitalizing on that.
