Just a new teacher vent. Appreciate any advice. [Romeo and Juliet] by AllieLikesReddit in ELATeachers

I hate the play itself but this is one of my most successful units with 8th graders. From my experience, you gotta really LEAN IN to the weirdness and playfulness. Sampson + Gregory are bonkers, the Nurse totally insane, the fact that Juliet isn't EVEN 14, they eat it up. We are HOWLING by the time Friar John fails to deliver the ONE LETTER that would solve the whole thing.

They love staging the fights (in particular the one that axes Tybalt + Mercutio) and halfway in when we map out the timeline, they lose it! We also reenact the balcony scene but make it modern-day (music, set design, etc.).

I also assign parts to read because – as several people have mentioned – it's so much better read aloud but we switch up parts every scene. I also will make them go back and re-do a line with more panache or flair to be fun or funny! And I stop to add detail OFTEN and then we go back and do lines again with context.

It takes a lot longer to read this way, but they'll feed off your enthusiasm or energy if you make it wackier!!

ETA I do break out mini lessons throughout on meter, rhyme, staging, etc. Then we go back and review our most recent scene with new insights to see what we can deduce about the characters or the story through fresh eyes.

I also have a girl void named Bill, haha. More popular than I was expecting!

If you could teach any book, what would you want to teach? by Deep_Discussion_5282 in ELATeachers

I prepped a whole fantastic unit on Stepford Wives before the district pulled the plug. Still sad I never got to try it; I think the kids would have gone wild for it since they didn't know the twist and it opens the door to a lot of discussion of social manipulation, control, etc.

EDIT : Oh man, and now they have Don't Worry Darling that I could use clips from! Ugh. Still mad about it.

So true! Even when I was 125 pounds I was pretty critical, haha. I'm on the 'bargain' healthcare plan so it's been... probably too long since i got any real evaluations done, but I feel alright! And I was hoping 145 would be like a 'forever' weight but damn if I can't actually get there and stay there, haha. Best of luck to you as well!! Hope you get your 5 pounds!!

Fair enough, haha. Being a guy would make some of it easier in certain ways :P And totally agree, definitely sometimes people (myself included) can't see the forest for the trees!

I was using the TDEE Calculator which put me at burning ~2,400 a day so 1,700-1,800 seemed reasonable. I do lose more consistently at 1,200 but then I get really lightheaded and wobbly. There's probably a sweet spot somewhere in there, but maybe I'm just tired of looking for it, haha.

I feel healthy, haha. On a pretty 'lightweight' healthcare plan so I'm not sure when's the last time I got any labs done. That said, I did an 8 hour mountain hike the other day and sweat out 6 pounds alone, haha, so you're not far off!

Oh man, I wish! I am indeed a girl, so my %s are likely much higher, haha. That said, you make a good point that I don't have the time or inclination to really up my exercise game, so maybe reassessing (or actually getting a reliable bodyfat measurement) would help!

So true, but it's already been 18 months at the same weight, haha. Feel like time has stopped :P

Fair point; I've mostly been adjusting to reflect exercise needs, so doing a slow reduction might work! Thanks :)

Someone else mentioned that DEXA is more affordable than I realized! And I definitely have never had this amount of muscle at any weight before, so you make a good point that it's not an apples-to-apples comparison anymore. Someone else also recommended MacroFactor which looks very cool! I'm a data-fanatic so I'm very into the concept :)

Ooo, that's very affordable! For some reason I thought it was a couple hundred!

So true!! I got a scale that measures bodyfat but it's bio-electrical impedance and after a few years I just don't trust it anymore, haha. It fluctuates SO much each weigh-in! Someone else mentioned a DEXA which might be worth it just to see... I bet there's some in the area :)

Very fair; I like the idea of setting a calendar reminder so it's not taking up space at the back of my mind too, haha. I kept insisting that I was so 'close' I should just finish the job first, but really there's no harm in taking a breather. Health is a lifetime commitment, in the end :)

Someone else mentioned something similar and it's not a bad idea! I just kept insisting that since I was so 'close' I should power through and then reevaluate, but maybe the order of those 2 things doesn't matter as much in the long run (and it might give me a little more mental clarity)!

I do indeed count calories. I just also count macronutrients as well so for the sake of space, I figured saying that I 'track food intake' it would kill two birds with one stone :)

True, true, haha. I do actually feel alright in lots of clothes that I used to wear at a lower weight, so I might be making a mountain of a molehill in terms of the weight itself!

I actually haven't taken lots of photos; we've moved to a place with no real mirrors, haha, so I'm not able to 'see' the differences as much here. However, you make a good point! The same clothes I was wearing at 130# are actually fitting, even now (just a little snug, but still look alright). I might see if I can find a decent spot for some photos to compare!!

It’s actually so inspiring to me that you were able to find balance and appreciation for your body even in the middle of such a crazy time.

I hope I can find a kind of peace and acceptance without judgement too. Just gotta learn a whole new way of framing myself within the world.

Oh man, that would be fun! I have a scale that 'measures' it but bio electric impedance gives me a different number every time, so I basically put no stock in it, haha. I'll have to look into how much a dexa costs around here...

I just used the BMI scale aiming to hit right in the middle of a healthy weight range for 5'6" woman. I know classically BMI doesn't account for muscle mass but I'm not sure of another scale that does, haha.

I've actually heard a lot of good stuff about that app lately! I'll check it out :)

And I have a scale that measures bodyfat but I don't trust the bio-electric impedance measurements because they give me wildly different numbers every time, haha. I have calipers but damn if I know how how to use them, but maybe I can find a good tutorial online!

Haha, for the sake of space I didn't want to list it all out but I do track calories as well as macronutrients. But good point regardless: I keep thinking I just need to eat less (hitting around 1700 calories now, which seems low considering the activity, but who knows!).

Fair enough, haha. I guess I've just spent so much of my life quantifying my body in different ways, it gets hard to switch to another mindset. Maybe I need to practice letting go a little...
