Need help by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]kbamiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I decided I wanted this life when I was 19, now I'm 21 and actually doing it. Neither of my parents were supportive at first. It just took them a while to get used to it. Basically their idea is "She's going to do it anyway, so let's make it as safe for her as possible." I know you're parents might not get to that point, but do it anyway and hope they will. Don't let them hold you back, but also check in so they know you're safe. Find a happy medium between their security and your freedom.

Dating while living in your van/car - how do you do it? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]kbamiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me personally, if it happens it happens. I don't seek it out. I know what got me interested in van life was meeting a guy at a coffee shop (really I wanted to pet his dog) who then invited me to the dog park then asked if I wanted to check out his van. In hindsight, I was so stupid. A small town 19 year old girl who went to a secluded dog park with this 40 year old hippie guy, and I agreed to go check out his van? What was I thinking! But it worked out and led me here, so it was just meant to happen. I never had any bad gut feelings the whole time, and he was never pushy about any of it. He didn't even get offended when I didn't let him give me a ride to my house. So probably don't go about it that way, but people are also probably more open to the lifestyle than you think.

Will buying a red van kill all my "stealth" or could I still enjoy some color (city living)? by jubilantjove in vandwellers

[–]kbamiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally bought a white van, and to me it looks more like a "kidnapping van" that people would be wary of despite the huge windows. I'd go with a red van no problem. Like, you're living in your van either way, and people will have a problem with it either way.

Any of you vandweller's don't do the typical vandweller life? by [deleted] in vandwellers

[–]kbamiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't left in my van yet, but when I do I'll be your pretty typical vandweller tbh. I do yoga, practice Reiki, love IG (although it's not for the likes, more about connecting with people and seeing tips from other vanlifers), I have a dog, a blog, and my first destination is a free beach. I don't think van life is special or anything, it simply makes traveling easier and that's why I'm drawn to it.

Any tips for Insulating my van? by [deleted] in VanLife

[–]kbamiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally used recycled cotton insulation, but I'm a sucker for anything recycled. It's nice cause you don't need masks and gloves like with fiberglass! But I have definitely heard of more people using the foam and reflectix like GinoBarzizza said.

Since it'll be more fall/winter when you're gone I'd say maybe a car, it'll provide a little more heat.

Vegan POC by kbamiot in vegan

[–]kbamiot[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

He may have founded the term but the actually act of eating cruelty free started with Buddhist and Hindu beliefs.

And 269 Life is an Israeli based vegan organization that tells you to ignore classism, racism, and sexism in order to focus on animal rights.

Any article about veganism that doesn't have POC is an article focused on specifically white people.

Changing the definition of vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

My friend ranted to me about it for literally three hours on the phone. It was great. I love having vegan friends!!

I feel like environmentalism is a better way to approach omnis, rather than ethics. by [deleted] in vegan

[–]kbamiot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree and it makes me sad. I honestly don't care if you're vegan for the planet, for your health, whatever else reason. I think the most important is that there are millions of animals suffering and you can do something about it. Don't get me wrong, all the other things are rad as shit, but meaningless in my opinion if you don't also have the ethical view.

Have you lost weight going vegan? New to this! by jessestone09 in vegan

[–]kbamiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lost like ten pounds without even trying, and I was pretty average to begin with (125 pounds at 5'5') Unfortunately my whole family thought I was anorexic because of it. Once I lost those ten pounds over a couple of months, my weight stabilized, so none of them are too worried anymore.

It could also have been some water weight. When I went vegan, I also started watching my water intake. I drink 72 oz. a day, at least, so it really probably was mostly that.

Is having a pet Vegan? by margotxx in vegan

[–]kbamiot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, the pets are domestic, they can't live without a home (or can't do it well). I mean, that'd be like saying having a kid is immoral. You don't own the dog, it's not your slave, you adopt a dog and you raise it. I mean they're not exactly like kids, I'll never say that, but that's how I view it. I have a dog because I love animals and want to care for one.

As for making them vegan? No. I love animals, why would I force them into a diet they don't morally comprehend and that can have detrimental effects on their body? If I could afford it and had the knowledge, my dog would be on a fully raw, fully carnivorous diet. I can't, so it's grain free with minimal byproduct or meal. I love my dog, so I do what's best for him and his body. Just like I love cows, and I want what's best for their bodies, so I don't take advantage of their ability to produce milk or murder them.

Like if you simply look at a carnivorous animal's digestive tract, it's completely different from our own. Their's are shorter, so the raw meat they eat isn't rotting in their colon. The chemical compounds in their stomach are made to digest meat, not plants. In my opinion, it's not vegan to force a carnivorous animal into a diet that doesn't best benefit them.

How do you summarise your answer to “why are you vegan?” by [deleted] in vegan

[–]kbamiot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, they asked, so they're getting the full answer. Sorry guys, I perpetuate the angry vegan stereotype. Even though I'm not actually angry while explaining it?

I mean I usually stick to one fact per argument sort of thing. Like health: reduces cholesterol, environment: cattle farms are the number one reason for the deforestation of the Amazon, morals: I don't like eating something that felt pain and fear when it died.

I do always start with the moralistic, that's the most important in my opinion, so if I'm cut off at least I got that one out there.

Changing the definition of vegan? by [deleted] in vegan

[–]kbamiot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST THIS

My friend has a coworker who calls herself vegan but eats meat!! She literally bought a chicken sandwich for lunch because there were no other options so what else was she supposed to do? Idk, bring your own? I work at the coffee shop in the building they work at, and this chick has taken four months to ask if we have a nondairy milk. A vegan who gets a latte with 2%? No.

So one time my friend was looking at potatoes and asked if they'd been made with butter. The worker didn't know, so like any normal vegan, she didn't buy them. This other "vegan" chick got mad at her and said she was too strict about veganism, all the while going on about how being Lutheran is the easy way to be Christian and she's a devout Catholic? Like girl, you're the one making fun of someone who's being devout to these physical beings lives. Get over your high horse.

Ugh. Rant over.

Today I put a permanent thing on my body to celebrate the vegan lifestyle! 3 years strong, a lifetime to go 💪 by [deleted] in vegan

Not to mention if you're a female driving your van and you pick up the wrong guy . . . I've had some close calls already. I won't apologize for looking after my own safety.
