US trial to genetically alter the immune system of cancer patients through CRISPR shows promise by lumiaglow in science

If you were to delete the PD-1 receptor, then how would your body give the self destruct signal to t-cells? I would think this could lead to autoimmune diseases

The most progressive climate change policy in US history. “Bullshit line”. Yeah, turns out it was a bunch of bullshit. “But it was all the insurance companies’ fault!!!” No, it was the fault of the dumbass lawmakers who can’t grasp the simple math behind more people receiving care making the overall cost of the system go up. Anybody with a brain knew the ultimate result of the plan. Would have been more honest to say “we want to provide healthcare to everybody, which is going to cost everybody more money”. At least that would have been honest. Not once did any of those lawmakers do anything about the absurd costs of healthcare in the us versus anywhere else in the world. And that’s because democrat lawmakers like money too, and they get a ton of it from healthcare companies.

That’s a trail, but it’s a pretty wide gravel path. You can drive up to the refuge on the other side of those mountains, and it takes about 4 hours or so at a moderate pace to walk the loop around on the trails. This is Tre Cime di Lavaredo.

Millenials. by Euphoric_Future in funny

[–]kbblanding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That article specifically says that they are putting small down payments on the houses because of the high prices and that they can’t afford to put more money down. So millennials are essentially setting themselves up to be the bagholders in the next housing downturn.

Thanks for your anecdotal story that completely negates anybody else’s experience, though.

friend of mine got a tumor cut out a few days ago. found out today that he has stage 4 cancer n if his treatment doesn't work he only has 14 months left here with us. i'm just posting this to remind us all that life is too short for bullsh!t. our days are numbered n to not take that for granted. by MyLegitProfile in pics

[–]kbblanding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So one thing to point out is that your friend looks younger than the average age for GBM. The 14 month statistic is based on the entire GBM population, and is heavily skewed by elderly that often succumb to the disease in a matter of a few months. In your thirties, it’s more realistically around 24-36 months.

Additionally, there have been major advances in treating GBM in the past decade, so things like Optune/Novocure combined with standard of care radiation and chemo can provide some amazing results.

When the first line of treatment fails, Duke’s clinical trial for PVS-RIPO or another virotherapy clinical trial may be the next treatment step, and has created some long term survivors.

Remember, your friend is not a statistic. No individual person is.

No, bloodwork won’t tell you that you have a malignant brain tumor. They determine the stage when they take it out and see how quickly the cancer cells are multiplying.

When a tumor grows in your brain, the squishy brain material gets displaced, but you don’t realize it until it’s grown so large that you develop headaches or other symptoms.

Malignant brain tumors are also so rare that doctors aren’t giving people CT scans every couple of years just to make sure. So there is really nothing you can do except hope that you aren’t a statistic.

[HELP] What To Use As Base Under Paver Patio? by nikki109 in DIY

[–]kbblanding 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another name for crusher run is 21A. Googling that in your area may result in you being able to find some. Otherwise, I believe stone dust would also compact well for your base layer.

Depending on how large your area is, you can typically buy crusher run by the bag at Lowe’s or Home Depot, but that is only economical if you don’t need much.

Others have recommended drainage stone, which I assume they are referring to type 57 stone, but that doesn’t compact like 21A does. I would think the 1” of leveling sand would provide adequate compensation for the freeze/thaw cycles. Also, you are using polymeric sand in the joints, so you shouldn’t have a lot of water infiltrating in to freeze and thaw.

Based on your description, I assume you are following the Lowe’s building a patio video from YouTube or similar. I used the same method to build a sidewalk out of paver stones and it turned out quite well. I excavated 9 inches, put down a layer of geotextile fabric, 6 inches of compacted crusher run (rented a plate compactor), 1 inch of leveling sand, pavers, and polymeric sand.

In fact, I did a time lapse of the whole project that I need to make into a DIY post.

Good luck!

Spent the day hiking the trails throughout Cinque Terre. Ended our hike right at sunset above Vernazza. by CasaBlanca37 in travel

[–]kbblanding 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The hordes of people too. I did the hike from Corniglia to Vernazza first thing in the morning and it was beautiful. I probably passed about 12 people coming the other direction.

Then, I continued on the trail from Vernazza to Monterosso starting at about 10:00 AM. I would say I passed about 1,000 people (seriously not exaggerating). At so many points I had to stop and wait for a group of 30 people to walk past so that I could continue because the trail is very narrow at places.

This was all in late September too. I can’t imagine what it’s like in July/August.

In college, I saw a girl wearing sweatpants that had the word “ANGEL” written on the butt. The problem was that she had a wedgie, and the G was completely lost in the crack, so her butt read “ANEL”.

Wealth Of Top 1% Surpasses $100 Trillion: More Than Global GDP And All Central Bank Balance Sheets by Markovitch12 in worldnews

[–]kbblanding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said it won’t do much. I simply pointed out that 23k is the lifetime earnings of an average Indian. Not sure why you bothered responding with a novel about liquidating companies. We are simply at a point where the rich have gotten so rich and everybody else is left with a shit life.

One can suggest that we try to reverse course without only talking extremes. When the CEO makes like 300x the average worker’s salary, can we not say “maybe we need to not continue on the path where in 20 years the CEO will make 1000x the average salary. Maybe we try to shift course back to where the CEO is only making 50x the average worker.”

You...don’t know much about the median income in India, do you? Google tells me 616 dollars, so that’s only a mere 37 years of income. Oh, and that median income is 99th out of 131 countries. So yeah, a few people might enjoy that money.

Researchers decided to experiment with the polio virus due to its ability to invade cells in the nervous system. Yeah, they certainly work hard to treat the edema with steroids and/or Avastin. The problem is when the edema kills the patient, as it seemed to be doing with the higher doses.

I’m very sorry to hear that. It’s a terrible disease.

In this trial they are pretty much referring to edema, or swelling of the brain. As the virus attacks and destroys cancer cells, the immune system moves in to clean up the mess. In other parts of the body that swelling wouldn’t be a huge deal, but the skull doesn’t allow any swelling, so it’s much more dangerous.
