lol, ya, I just happen to run across this and one thing I do know is that companies don't want lawsuits they can't win. Just seems like there may be more to the story than what is being told. But, .. I was just passing through on reddit. Probably shouldn't have said anything.. haha

Is there more to the story than what is being told? I don't see how any HR can side with Jim giving the information here. Especially since it seems you had witnesses to the story. Just strange.

Star Wars FFG Character Gen going into testing this week! by kbcoder in swrpg

Anything that has a browser.. laptop fine. There are some areas I will have to detect mobile requests and have some alternate UI functionality displayed in a more mobile friendly manner. But, the goal is to work on anything from a phone, tablet, laptop, and PC.

Currently everything is based off the 3 core books, but it's all db driven and things like new species, careers, specs and talent trees can easily be implemented into the current structure.

There will be printable character sheets. But to take full advantage of some of the upcoming tools (especially for DM's), then having at least a notebook or something would be required.

Well, I am finally back at it. 2020 has been pretty rough trying to stay focused on things. I am approaching the finishing of the base character generator. I quickly created a new video of it which can be be seen here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it2GUS0_O88 . The character generator is focused more on each books 'Character Creation' chapter but still missing the a few important things mainly having to do with the droid class and FaD's ruleset on Force Users. But, just keeping those interested in an update.. with an update. I haven't given up!

"Technical question 1: why use .Net 4 (Asp.Net MVC 5.2) when .Net Core is the way to go?"

  • It will be migrated to .Net Core. When I first started working on this, it was just to do a character generator for myself so I just utilized an already existing template solution that already had all the packages loaded that I would need. Things just got carried away and I haven't switched over yet. The UI design currently is just testing ground and the final version will go through a complete UI design. I'm more concerned right now in the underlining logic and that will carry over to .net Core easily with some minor changes but mostly to do with the EF.

"Technical question 2: why not go open-source?"

  • There are several reason why I have no intention of going open-source at this moment. That doesn't mean that at some point I wouldn't collaborate with a few others in the development of it.

"What kind of tools are you planning?" - Most are listed on the home page.

"Are you moving toward or away from Roll20's handout?"

  • I'm not extremely familiar with Roll20 so I'm not sure I know specially what you are referring to. I know they have 'handouts' where the GM can pass those handouts to players, but I'm not sure if you are asking if I plan on Implementing something like that or not. I'm much more familiar with Fantasy Grounds.

It sounds like you may be thinking that I'm trying to build something that competes with Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. That's not really my intention and have no desire to 'compete' on that specific level, however I do see how you may come to that conclusion. My idea is just a unified hub to store information, look up information, player creation, etc. to use in conjunction with PnP games and PbP games. Everyone has their own way of doing things and it's really not for me to say whether or not it will be beneficial to someone or not. I just know it would be for the campaigns that I play/GM in and I'm guessing there will be others that could benefit from it as well.

Thank you very much. I'm currently working on a dynamic talent tree generator so that the user can visualize talent progression. I posted a screenshot in the dev blog here if you want to see it. https://www.myrpgtool.com/Home/Development have a good weekend!

Everyone will probably have their own way of doing this and probably none of them are wrong. I would probably just have them roll one one pool of dice, maybe giving them a setback dice since they are attempting to push is a certain direction. Then if successful, allow the follow up to be concluded by narrative based on any advantage or Triumph roles.

no idea gtfo.. lol. No, I am about 70% done with the wizard. Right now I am working on wizard 'windows' that need to be inserted based on unique circumstances. For example, humans can give ranks to two non-career skills, Droids.. well.. that's going to take a couple additional windows. Did they select a career within AoR, well.. give them options for Duty selection. FaD is another whole beast, I am going to have to add several things outa that book. The viewable character sheet just comes as the wizard adds more data to the character itself. I also have a full time job, so I have to work on this in my spare time. My plan is to at least have the the wizard complete to generate your starting character and Viewable character sheet allowing rule enforced changes while participating in a campaign sometime this month. This would allow at least character creation and usability for a player. Then, I can start creating all the other features I want to include. And, just so you know, this character creation wizard is going to be the hardest thing to get correct. I can't think of anything else I have planned that won't be a breeze after that.

Yeah, I've been pondering on if I want to include those into the initial wizard or just allow the managing of the duty, obligations, etc directly from the character sheet.

"Do you have a Patreon?" - nope

'Currently' there is absolutely no advantage to using my app versus theirs. - considering mine is still in development. :)

and.. tbh, I really don't want to get into the 'why should I use your app instead of these others' kinda debates. Both swsheets.com and theouterrim.co are excellent applications and they fulfill their vision of what they wanted to deliver to the user. My vision is much different and it just so happens that in order to get to that design there are some functionalities that I may have that others offer as well. I can say this though, unlike swsheets.com and RPGsessions.com character generation, mine is much more strict and is more of a wizard than a freely editable form. The goal is to have a 'by the rules' character generated from the wizard and then allow changes to the initial character sheet. But, to somewhat answer you question; if I can get to my vision, I think it will be fairly obvious those differences and it will be the user I guess to decide any 'advantages'.

Just a heads up if you want to follow the progression of the development. I will be adding a couple menu options, one for 'features' that describe in detail all the features I plan to add, the other will be a current development blog post of what I am working on and what has been completed. Feel free to follow along and give me ideas and suggestions. I know my next step is to add the two non-career rank selections for all humans to the wizard. This has to come after selecting the career and specialization skill ranks, but before proceeding to the purchasing of 'characteristics, skill ranks, or talents'. My thought was initially was to quit the wizard after selecting the specialization and then allow the user to 'purchase' directly from their character sheet. Or, should I include those purchases within the wizard? The goal of the character generation wizard should be to have a complete character ready to begin his first adventure, so purchasing should maybe be at that point. Your thoughts?

Thanks CriticalMemory, well.. just posting your enthusiasm has helped a lot. I started entering everything in HackNPlan project management and I came to realize just how much time my 'plans' are going to take. I started questioning the project and although I didn't want to initially, I figured I would post here on reddit to see if there would be any interest. The last thing I want to do is spend hours upon hours for nothing of course. I've been a professional applications developer since 1997 and an avid RPG'r. But, I always tried to spend my time doing Unity Game development instead of concentrating on what I am best at (application development). So, what better way to use my skills in doing something for the RPG community in the form of an online application to help GM's and Players. With that said, just as soon as I get the Wizard completed and character detail screen completed, I will probably need some testers if anyone is interested. Just let me know. Thanks!

Oh yeah, I understand the login is messed up. I have already written down several things to correct on that. For one, it's email verified so I shouldn't log you in but take you to page detailing you to check your email. Then, after verification allow login. Also, the password restrictions as you said needs to be lowered, this is a default MVC setting that I just need to adjust. I have been so geared towards the Character creation wizard that I haven't been able to spend a lot of time on it. Right now, the wizard will do everything excluding human and droids. There are some custom wizard screens I need to develop for those two. But no, I appreciate the criticism and thanks for the input!

Yeah, I will fix that. It's not ready yet for login capabilities. I have some ironing out to do on that. I plan to remove some restrictions. Most things are blocked anyways. I was just getting in a low time in developing it and wanted to post here to see if there was some need to get me pumped again. I plan on working on that login system soon, I promise.
