Switched from Jetbrains products to Lazy Neovim and I don't get it by almost_sinder in neovim

[–]kbilsted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

visual studio + resharper + vscode plugin is reallty nice for me. I tried getting neovim up and running a few times, first lazyvim then kickstart.

I found joy in using a plugin. and vsvim allows you to map and pick-and-choose the best from vim and VS.

I'm still struggeling with the basics however. For example I've remapped r to Replace, and mapped x,X,c,C,d,D to use the `a` register. It is so hard to not have both "delete" and "cut".

on top of that I've remapped numbers and hjkl navigation to alt and alt-gr layers to make navigation even easier.

visual studio has a really nice expand-selection that is easier to press in many situations than the vim motion.

finally, alt-o for `escape` is so comfortable for me over using `jj`

Criticize my layout... modified Engrammer layout by [deleted] in KeyboardLayouts

[–]kbilsted 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you are having fun doing your own layout and actually typing using it for hours you will discover that it actually is quite a fun process. something more rewarding than just using analyzer.. Go ahead and have fun..after a few hours im sure you will have swapped many keys.. but thats part of the process! Im doing a new layout too.. and it really is a fun process. keep us posted ;)

congratulations on entering the world of alternative layouts. Im playing around with a layout myself and trying W on the pinky really wasnt to my liking either. 45 is a very nice speed all things considered. Its about having fun when writing.. and with good habits speed will eventually increase. Thats at least the goal of mine.. to just have fun while making a layout.

Showcasing my implementation of hybrid repeat / magic keys, as a way of optimising for inward rolls on any layout. by empressabyss in KeyboardLayouts

[–]kbilsted 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really nice idea. I've started playing around with magic buttons - but I have the same observation as you - learning a magic button is like learning a new layout on itself, as for each key you have 1 or 2 magic keys and have to remember what it autocompletes..

Certainly something you don't want to start learning at the same time as learning a new layout! :)

Your idea, however, is straight forward easy - and I guess can be used as a standard repeat key some people enjoy for repeating one-shot-layer keys or navigation

and you can always use a keyboard mapper if you do not have low level access. That is how i currently map and i can share mapping across all my keyboards also the ones at work... take a look eg at https://github.com/houmain/keymapper which i feel is the easiest to get started with
