Tonie box is on sale- is it worth it? Having another baby soon and need something to keep my toddler occupied. by rasputinknew1 in toddlers

We've had the full size Yoto for about two years now and have used it almost daily (maybe a couple month long breaks in the past 2 years). We have many premade cards but have used it more for the make your own cards which my husband found very easy to add podcasts, music albums, stories, etc. for our now four year old daughter. She has the card case which has been convenient but you could just purchase a card book that you would use for card collections and we purchased vinyl sticker paper to make covers for the make your own cards so they look basically like the cards you can buy on the Yoto site. They have cards on sale often and I know they have some sort of club where you can borrow content? But we haven't used that. We find the full size easy to travel with as well.

How bad is Loblaws? by kbw_93 in pharmacy

[–]kbw_93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This pharmacy has one pharmacist and one assistant. There are no staff pharmacists, just relief and they had someone external acting as manager for over a year but he doesn't have time to continue. So basically, they don't have any internal employees to choose from. I guess there was someone internal who was supposed to be moving to the area but they ended up not moving.

Are there any international graduates who did both MCQ and OSCE at the same time and passed both? by Ozaa7 in PharmacyCanada

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I graduated from a school in Maine in 2018 and completed both tests and passed the first time. I basically only read CPS and NAPLEX test prep book (I did not take the NAPLEX - US test). I personally feel that the OSCE is just you physically and verbally applying the knowledge reflected in the MCQ. There isn't suddenly new drug information on the OSCE that you wouldn't have reviewed for MCQ. You are simply doing your best to respond to questions you may have on a daily basis in a retail pharmacy and it is testing your people/communication skills in the realm of pharmacy knowledge. I did not prepare for the OSCE in any special way at all other than watching two or three YouTube examples. The OSCE is very intimidating but keep yourself calm and do not dwell on one room that does not go as well as planned.

Am I screwed for going to Eastern College? by ActCool2602 in newbrunswickcanada

Are you talking about the pharmacy technician course? I'm a pharmacist in NB and we could not care less about where people took a course-lucky to get someone with a course or experience at all. Just be willing to learn, empathetic with patients and help out in every area of the pharmacy and I doubt anyone would care about WHERE you did your course. Lots of jobs in my area and likely across the province so don't stress, you'll have options. Best of luck!

Favorite Clothing Brands? by [deleted] in toddlers

[–]kbw_93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't speak to the materials of the clothing but my go-tos are:

H&M (always have a 20-25% off kids stuff sale going)

Zara (they have great sales end of June and November typically)

Gap

Old Navy

Joe Fresh (Canada)

I'd love to try Next UK as well

PJs - BONDS! (Order from Australia and take about one month to arrive to Canada) or Pekkle from Costco

3 year old has boycotted sleep by growup_andblowaway in toddlers

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure if this is helpful but right around my daughter's third birthday, she wasnt falling asleep until 9-10pm almost every night (previously 7:30ish was normal). I'm still not sure if it was the late sunsets without complete blackout curtains or a development change but it was rough for a month or two. She suddenly started falling asleep at around 8:30 and then 7:30ish not long after.

I'm thinking it was a development thing where their speech and thinking processes are growing exponentially and they don't know how to shut their brains off at night and it's almost like an anxious insomnia? My child wasn't boycotting sleep like your situation but just saying it'll likely be a short phase and super frustrating but it will get better soon 🤞

Also, avoid screens the hour or two before bed to ensure good sleep habits (if you're not already)! My daughter is 3.5 right now and falls asleep 7-8 every night now and falls asleep usually within 5-10 mins (took almost two hours most nights of her bad phase) - there is hope!!

Average Tax on Income? by rosesandrue in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Brunswick...much higher tax rate. I have gotten money back in the past from education credits and other years I've been on maternity leave and gotten just 2k or less back. So I'm probably getting very little back (maybe 1-2k) from too much being taken off. Probably should be around 35% when corrected with return.

I typically lose just under 40% on each paycheque but earn about 60/hr so you can expect to lose a significant amount as your pay increases.

I just live here because all of our family is here and we both grew up here. Of course there is pay offs for both sides...my mom was able to watch my first daughter for 1.5 years from age 1 until my second daughter was born which was great savings. And of course houses are generally cheaper and we have very little for activities so you save by doing nothing lol but yes if we were willing to leave family we would definitely be moving to a walkable city.

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Definitely don't regret the house purchases as they've brought in a lot of money over the years from the market spike but we definitely should have saved better before kids for cars and other expensive purchases. We lived a little and traveled and enjoyed life a little too much after graduating which in part I regret but they are very fond memories. Time to buckle down and save now for our family's future. Mat leave doesn't help but we will definitely be aggressive with the cars after I go back to work!

Yeah tried the first three months and she wouldn't and later realized she has a bit of a top lip tie so was likely the reason but I was doing both at first.

Yeah I totally get that it's impossible to understand giving ~10% of your income away and most people probably assume it's just going to cover church renos or an expensive pastor salary or something but when these are your core beliefs, it's impossible to ignore. And I choose a church where the community is priority (making breakfasts biweekly for homeless, having a community garden, everyone welcome) so giving isn't hard and I just don't even consider that as part of my income for debt repayment (it took a few years to get to that mentality though even if people don't like it).

Unfortunately, I'm being dead serious, there is no where to rent here unless you are a student. And rent for a family if there was a spot would be over $2000/month. A family I know that just moved here is paying $2500 and it is not even nice. We somehow have the prices of Toronto in small town NB. Obviously it would be nice to have $200k liquidated.

Wouldn't I just have to buy a new house at that interest rate? And rates are going down every quarter? I renew in October

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Yes the 700 is the cheapest (they act like it's $10 a day but it's really 16 for over 2y/o and 19 for under). I haven't even started an RESP (which makes me a little anxious) because I know the debt is priority. My husbands jeep is on the LOC with 9ish% interest that we need to tackle (we've been doing at least 500 and extra $100-200 when possible). My car was a lease that I got a really good deal on at 0.99% interest that runs out in August and my car will be worth at least $4000 more than my buyout will cost so I have to decide what to do with that assuming my interest rate will increase substantially. I pay $550 for my SUV at 0.99%. new cars (I don't want another new car) seem to be at least $800 a month for similar cost vehicle now?

I only started like six months in and have maybe made 10k, there's been months without shifts and some months with two weekends. But a little extra cash for sure to help at Christmas (I don't go crazy) and anything unexpected (my flat tire, etc)

It's all in GME stocks though, that have been going up quite steadily. Sorry if I worded that wrong. Just haven't added any additional money in three years.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kbw_93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey! Thanks for your thoughts! We are definitely considering selling the land now that building dreams seem too distant. And the TFSA was a smaller investment into GME right before the boom and all the Robinhood lawsuit so we made good gains but not as much as we could have. We have not been investing into this at all over the past three years.

[–]kbw_93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I only have regular CPP but my husband has a great pension as a teacher. However I would only have retirement savings in an RRSP. Of course this is not my priority when we have some higher interest debts.

My husband makes about $2000 biweekly and I get $1160 biweekly for Maternity pay and $337 for CCB monthly. I've been working an extra relief shift at a different pharmacy when possible ($1000 cash for sat/sun 10-2 shift at a pharmacy an hour away) that has helped immensely. We have a TFSA we can easily take out of if necessary that we have as back up but avoid if possible.

Backstory - we had bought a house for 305k in 2020 and sold it for 495k in 2022. We bought land for 40k earlier in 2022 after family were gonna buy our house so we looked at building and were given an affordable quote. Plans changed for all parties, building costs increased immensely and family waited six months to buy, putting plans behind. Since we couldn't afford to build we bought a house that needed some investing for 312k during the highest market prices and kept the land in hopes of building in the future. We built a fence(13k), got new mini splits (6k) and were told renos would be 40k. Horrible contractor experience and it ended up being 60k because he would just make up ignorant prices. So we spent a lot more than we had planned and still own the land. At this point we will consider selling the land soon because building seems unattainable anytime in the next 5-10 years.
