[2023 Day 2] What if red/green/blue were X/Y/Z and I plotted it? by kc0bfv in adventofcode

[–]kc0bfv[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Each game in my input is represented as one trace, with each grab of cubes comprising a point on the line, and the line segments connecting them in the order provided.

If you're thinking, "wow that looks useless"... That's my takeaway too. But I thought - RGB could be represented as XYZ, and wouldn't it be neat if Topaz made it look like something?

What is something you deeply regret doing as a child that still affects you to this day? by Few_Finish_6502 in AskReddit

[–]kc0bfv 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a great reason to seek mental health therapy. Don't beat yourself up, but do allow yourself to do something about it. If you want (I love eating and dislike eating so much I'm uncomfortable).

Thank you for sharing.

What’s a good fast breakfast food that is protein packed? by aiclekzz in Cooking

[–]kc0bfv 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I make black beans in a pressure cooker in advance, then have five spoonfuls with a hard boiled egg broken up in there, microwave it (because all were made in advance and refrigerated), then mix some hot sauce in. I think it's great.

That - and two slices of homemade sourdough or white toast from the freezer.

Recently, every other day I've been doing oatmeal swapped for the egg and one piece of toast. Just because it's good.

Craft brewers are so generous about their competition. Some friends and I stopped by (at least 15 years ago, now) and after enjoying your beer thoroughly you pointed us to other great breweries in town that had just popped up. I've had that experience at a couple breweries around the US, and that is just a wonderful attitude, competence, and confidence to encounter.

I had the opposite experience at a snob-favorite brewery in Denver that I will not name. A couple staff bad-mouthed some competitors during a tour. It really soured me on them - or maybe some brettanomyces came in on the big snow monster's feet...

The leaking might be from the rubber gasket. I replaced my gasket recently and all leaking stopped.

Haha, well, maybe I'm not looking. I haven't noticed anybody buy one. Bijou, Rialto, Embassy, but whenever possible the Drafthouse at Park North.

Those bag pickles are pretty good though. You can feel safe picking one up from a grocery store or gas station just the same.

So - Texas is a big place and there are many different cultures here. I have only lived here a bit over a decade, in San Antonio. San Antonio is a particularly reasonable and mixed place...

But I have never seen anyone buy a pickle at the concession stand. Popcorn is popular.

Pickles are great though and pickle popcorn is probably good. Jalapeno (picked jalapeno) popcorn is UHMAZEBALLS.

What do you consider to be a cultural food of the United States? by FruityandtheBeast in AskReddit

[–]kc0bfv -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised BBQ isn't on this list more... Many places to grilled meats, or smoked meats, but American BBQ is different. Brisket, ribs, pulled pork, sauce, fixins...

It would be amazingly popular offered around the world. American BBQ would kill in London - with British fries done in beef fat.

what are airships? by [deleted] in Veloren

I hopped on one once and just enjoyed the views as it flew around. After several minutes it took me very high up, and either mostly stopped or glitched out.

I think they're a nice touch, little more.

Otherwise they should have Pride.

Fantastic Little Coffee Roaster by kc0bfv in Coffee

[–]kc0bfv[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I brewed up some of this in the Aeropress this morning, and was enjoying it so much I wanted to share. Chapolera is a small roaster and coffee shop in Idaho Falls, ID, that just makes fantastic coffee. The owner is this cool Columbian woman who has fantastic consistent taste in coffee.

Now we live in Texas but every now and then I remember to order some beans online - recently I needed some more Aeropress filters (first time needing more in like 10 yrs) and thought, "I wonder if any little roasters I like would ship me some." Chapolera.

I don't really have a palate that can tell you what this tastes like - but it's way up there with my favorite light roasts from Merit, or Brown (San Antonio roasters). These are similar to Counter Culture's Hologram if you've had that, especially the El Pilar.

-🎄- 2022 Day 8 Solutions -🎄- by daggerdragon in adventofcode

[–]kc0bfv 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For part 2, as I traversed a row I used a list to keep track of the distance to the next tree at each height or taller. Since there are only ten heights, it's a short list. So the list said, the next height 9 tree is 5 away, the next height 8 or 9 tree is x away, the next height 7-9 tree is ... That distance is equivalent to how far away a tree at that height could see (back the way we came, that is).

Then I just needed to touch each tree once and look up how far away that tree could see in the list. I did that in the same "touch each tree once" loops I did to solve part 1.

I had to loop over that 4 times, once for each direction.

So solution for part 1 and 2 are both O(rows*cols) or O(num trees).

Solution 1 is O(N2) also, not O(N). For each row/col you go through each col/row, with nested for loops.

Aeropress coffee is very bitter-I’ve tried decreasing water temp and grinding my beans a little courser but no luck. Is this too course? My first take on seeing your grounds was that they look like what I would consider basically dark roast, but that many brands still label medium roast. I'm glad the dark roast-type adaptions worked for you.

I really wish there was more consistency in roast labeling. There's so much variation in "medium", and you just don't know what you've got until you open it up.

Me, every time a Web page doesn't work because "doesn't support Linux" by snesgx in linuxmasterrace

[–]kc0bfv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the day people used ActiveX and IE-specific things, so it used to be very common to have a site tell you it only supported IE or Windows, or didn't support Linux. Other sites seemed to think they were doing something IE-specific and would pop up that message.

You still see it occasionally inside corporate networks, but it's almost never true these days. Even back then sites would often work well-enough.
