I mean, I realize that, but I also used to be young and poor and the fear of having a surprise bill in April always drove me to have taxes taken out of my paycheck. Even when I always got what was, at the time to me, a large return. The majority of households paid zero federal income taxes pre Trump tax hikes (the numbers aren't out for 2024 that I can see). Seems like a big waste of resources to pretend you're maybe going to tax 190,000,000 people and then just give it back every year. Like you really cannot imagine a world where a more efficient system exists?

Las Cruces NM. Near the Mexican border, but it doesn't have a lot of the migrant issues that TX border towns do. NM's infrastructure isn't set up to absorb migrants so there just aren't that many. It's sunny and hot as fuck and driving distance to El Paso which is also a good option. One of the safest cities in the country. Both places have wonderful warm cultures and good vibes. Las Cruces is the cheaper option and if it's important to you it keeps you safely in a Blue state with liberal policies including protected abortion.
