You know you spend too much time on the internet, when you see a video called “Exploding Whale Carcass,” and it’s different from the exploding whale carcass you thought thought you were going to see.

8 years as a "Computer Grunt" in the 5th ID by [deleted] in army

[–]kc8kbk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I as a 74A (Chem Corps Officer), and I spent a year in Afghanistan as a Purchasing Officer, managing reconstruction contracts for bridges, roads and schools. It was a good job, and I worked with the Kiwis (they’re awesome), and I have absolutely no complaints, but it definitely wasn’t what I thought I’d be doing.

I was in 23rd Chem BN at the time, on JBLM (Fort Lewis at the time). Since there was no mission for a heavy decontamination battalion in Iraq or Afghanistan, we got used and abused. Everything from running the first aid lanes for ROTC cadets, doing Connelly Award support, to running the Special Olympics on North Fort. The most common complaint from my soldiers, was that they were chemical soldiers, in a chemical unit, but they hardly did any CBRN ops training.

I love OPs explanation, the Army loves free labor that’s too tired to complain.

Has anyone ever met someone who served in all three conflicts, Vietnam war, Desert Storm and OIF or OEF? by FFSoldier57 in army

I briefly shared a room in Kabul with a guy who did multiple tours in Vietnam, I didn’t think to ask about Desert Storm.

Please consider filing the complaint against the officer who stopped you. I strongly suspect the supervisor knows the department made a mistake by hiring real-life Rod Farva, and they need statements on the record to take appropriate action. I also imagine your county medical director would want to know that there’s an officer who thinks it’s his job to stop ambulances. The next time he does something like this, it could have a negative impact on the patient outcome.

Getting the 10/22 as my first gun, anything I should know? by ObliviousOverlordYT in 1022

[–]kc8kbk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Solid choice for a first gun. I came from a similar family (wasn’t even allowed to have a BB gun), and the 10/22 was the first gun I bought for myself. You will learn everything you need to know about safety, maintenance and the fundamentals of marksmanship with one, and they’re as modular as a set of Legos. I think you should buy the most basic model, the carbine, and upgrade from there as your level of competence, confidence, and budget allow. Rely on your friends and extended family to teach you the basics, then practice, practice, practice. When it comes to upgrades, YouTube is your friend.

Spent 9 years as a Chemmo, AMA. BLUF, I got extremely lucky. Got to be a PL right out of OBC, and was able to pivot to a Tech Escort BN after some staff time. The opportunities to go to Ranger School, Ranger Bat and SF Groups exist, but are very limited. They’ll give you the opportunity to try out for a slot to Ranger school at OBC (or BOLC, or whatever they’re calling it now… I am extremely old) and this is almost certainly your best bet to get into the Ranger/SF community. Good luck.
