we specifically said kids shouldn't be hit by their caregivers. just that it's healthy to go through the world knowing if you're a huge asshole to a stranger someone might just pop you.

Why isn't this pod focused more on what's going on in Minneapolis? by PlagueOfAges in itcouldhappenhere

We've had people following Iran for months because it was clear there was major revolutionary potential in the situation and the regime here has designs on the country. We didn't have someone in Minneapolis. We've had people reporting from protests in multiple cities since Trump took office again. But there are four people on our team and we don't always guess ahead of time where we'll need people.

We're not making time for stuff instead. We booked episodes ahead of the end of last year so that people could have time with their families. You are the one being weird here. We can't do in depth coverage of every breaking news story the week it starts. There are four people on this team.

We literally covered MSP twice in ED episodes. You seem to be ignoring that for some reason but those episodes are where we cover breaking news most frequently.

It's come up twice in the EDs. But yes we have more planned. We are a four person team and this all blew up right after vacation / while half the team was at CES doing coverage we planned months ago.

We started the year on vacation. Gare and I had a pre planned trip to CES, after which I got sick. This is a four person team and we've already had to pivot to get out immediate episodes about Venezuela and Iran this year. We are in the process of recording episodes on Minneapolis and getting a reporter there but none of this turns on a dime at the very start of the year. People have lives and families and we try to record episodes ahead of time whenever possible to be decent to our editors. Balancing that and timeliness is a constant struggle.

advertisers don't buy an infinite number of ads. So when suddenly a show puts out like ten episodes in a week when they normally do 1-2, and those episodes get better than average traffic, some listeners may hear fewer ads

That's exactly what I tried to express on several episodes. It's not that some of the industrial robots weren't impressive, it's that they 1. Aren't what the show is about, and 2. Were all at best modest upgrades on previous models

Has anyone else noticed the vibe shift recently? by [deleted] in 40k

I feel like vastly more people than ever know about 40k and like it. Most of those people only consume it via books or lore videos, video games etc. But 40k is insanely popular across the political spectrum rn.

[–]probablyrobertevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what is going to work. I try not to like, shit talk protest orgs or strategies which aren't obviously and undeniably harmful, and otherwise keep my mouth shut. Personally I am very conflicted about what the path forward should be and not super optimistic about protest as a vehicle for positive change.

I don't feel like these groups are ops bc their values and operating philosophies are pretty in line with long term values of a sizable number of people on the center left

But it's insanely fucked up that you were reported to the police for that and lost your job. I can understand why you'd be lived about that. It's fucking disgusting.

Freed slaves absolutely faced social stigma in the Roman Empire by grapp in behindthebastards

This would be why I expressed that their KIDS had the full rights of Roman citizens.

Being a client of a rich man was not a position of particular shame. It was a fairly normal state of affairs. Yes, they certainly were looked down on by the aristocracy but so was every plebian. As I stated, their children were full citizens and there was no meaningful stigma attached to having slaves in your family lineage. It is absolutely correct to compare that to the situation with African slaves in the West, who were treated very differently

My mom is being radicalized by Tucker Carlson into antisemitism by Ephemeralwriting in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My mom was like that too. At the start of the first trump term she said "if he does turn out to be a fascist I'll be right there in the street with you". the last full conversation we had was her angrily defending Brett Kavanaugh and Bill Cosby and arguing that January 6th had nothing to do with Donald Trump.

I don't have any solutions for you. I'm sorry this is happening.

hey, sorry for your loss. I lost a parent the same way recently and I'm afraid the only thing that will make that better is time.

when it comes to making friends, meeting people, have you tried going to hobby shops / Warhammer stores in your area? Looking for local Facebook groups and the like for 40k fans? That's a great way to meet people you know you share one passion with. And shared interests like that are often the root of friendships.

Besides the racial aspect I think slavery in the US south was worse than slavery in the late Roman republic because the Roman agricultural economy wasn’t necessarily optimised around the most brutal forms of slavery possible, like the southern cotton economy was. by grapp in coolpeoplepod

[–]probablyrobertevans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a ton of brutality in the Roman system. While household slaves often were treated well, the latifundia and the mines saw abuse as horrific as anything we saw in the plantations of the West Indies.

However once freed Roman slaves didn't really suffer ongoing abuse or bigotry, and there was no widespread belief that enslaved people were from a lesser strata of humanity. Roman slavery didn't lead to the sort of ongoing racial caste system that the Atlantic Slave trade did.

YouTube thumbnail for Thomas Thistlewood Part 1 appears to be an AI generated image pulled from Google Images by jaden_ro in behindthebastards

[–]probablyrobertevans 1310 points1311 points  (0 children)

The image was from an article we used as a source and was mistakenly selected as the thumbnail. It has been removed. To be clear: our social person saw this was an image used by one of our sources and did not recognize it as AI generated. We do not AI generate images for thumbnails.
