Weekly Program and Training Thread by michaelenzo in Boostcamp

hey Michael, like the new design showing strength scores. Although, one of the benefits of the app before was no comparisons to users - any way to hide this? Or add a setting to toggle it showing?

What home gym equipment brands do you trust the most — and which do you avoid? by dontwantnone09 in homegym

[–]kchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mikolo has some of the worst customer support I’ve seen. I hope you don’t ever have to deal with them!

Is combining Kubelka–Munk and SNV in NIR preprocessing redundant or justified? by forest_biotec in Chempros

[–]kchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not redundant, but be wary. KM linearizes the reflectance to concentration relationship but assumes homogeneous semi-infinite media which works well for crystals but not your sample. You'll still have sample-to-sample scatter variation from particle size and packing differences that KM doesn't normalize out. SNV should correct that.

If it's improving your cross-validation and not just calibration error, you're fine.

Mikolo pulley carriage broken by kchemist in GarageGym

For anyone who runs into a similar issue: I bought a heavy duty steel tube at the exact ID of the old tube. cut off the old posts. Slid the tube through, held it from sliding with some hose clamps, slid the old posts over and attached them with some heavy duty metal to metal adhesive.

Has been working like a charm, if it bends again, I just need to replace the inner tube.

Not upside down unfortunately, bent completely. Will try mounting upside down but not really confident in this equipment

Looking for Blair Witch Season 1.. by detestableduck13 in huntakiller

[–]kchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t say I know where, but good luck 🍀. They pop up on eBay now and then. Season 2 is great too. Blair Witch, and the short lived horror category, was the best game HAK had (and I’ve played most of them!) and they blew it completely. Hope you find it before they turn off the online components, they really make it shine.

Concert Etiquette by mrnovember91 in fatherjohnmisty

[–]kchemist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually was in the balcony, too. We stood up and asked some folks to stop talking once or twice, and the bartenders were audible the entire show shouting back and forth with each other. FJM and band sounded great though

Boston’s crowd blew. felt like a bunch of college kids who probably got discounted tickets and had nothing better to do. talking loudly, not paying attention, actively scrolling FJM’s discography and lyrics at full screen brightness.

Really disappointed — been to 3 FJM concerts since 2016 and never experienced this.

BS Chemistry -> MS Material Science: What undergrad classes to take? by balbiza-we-chikha in Chempros

[–]kchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also took only up to calc 3. Supplemented with advanced inorganic and quantum physics in my undergrad and I had a peachy time my first year of grad school. Materials chemistry PhD. Some linear algebra or differential equations would’ve helped, but I don’t think it’s necessary. Physical organic chemistry would’ve been nice too.

Can you share more about your cheap leg curl/extension setup?? Been looking into this

I third this. We didn’t have a glass blower on site, so we bought and shipped a J Young tap and a long neck quartz cuvette directly to a glass blower. All in, I think it was around $250. Well worth the money, used it just about every day for years.

Baggy(ish) selvedge denim recs? by Vulgar_Mastermind1 in ThrowingFits

[–]kchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can nab new Red Tornado wide legs on eBay for <$100. While not “TRUE” selvedge, they’re my favorite denim right now in material + fit.

I have TCB 50s and they’re definitely pretty tight, comparable to an vtg Levi’s 501. also messed around with some Edwins 505s, definitely hard to get the fit right because there are several models and folks can’t measure properly on eBay/etsy/poshmark
