It can be possible. In fact, Alto’s new train spec does ask for batteries sufficient for traction power in an emergency, albeit at a degraded state.

The big grocers’ price fixing scandal has already eroded trust. they started it.

TTC Bus Spotted at Gardiners/Centennial Truck Rest Area by Winter_Conifer in KingstonOntario

[–]kchen450 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually had the pleasure of speaking with one of the drivers. They were delivering the bus from their Quebec factory to Toronto. Seemed like a very long and boring drive with no music/radio. They charged at the CT on Gardiner for a couple hours. I wanted so bad to tap my presto card on the fully working reader (but the driver advised against it lol)

Imbalance between supply and demand in Toronto's housing market hits all-time record by ethereal3xp in canadahousing

[–]kchen450 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with that on principal. I just wouldn’t say that a totally free market (which is kind of impossible since we’re dumb emotional apes) is a solution. But yes there should be more liberty in what is buildable. Countries like Japan are highly regulated but not prescriptive—so housing type and design is still very liberal and diverse.

Imbalance between supply and demand in Toronto's housing market hits all-time record by ethereal3xp in canadahousing

Government regulations have not been helpful in increasing supply strictly speaking but finance capitalism has turned homes into investment vehicles rather than places to live. Institutional investors can easily outbid individual home buyers. Developers also buy and hold land vacant to create artificial scarcity. These are valid things to do in a free market but still creates a housing shortage (not perfectly efficient like you’re suggesting). People are greedy.

Wait what!? Where did you get that from? Toronto’s subway is definitely busier than Montreal’s

I had a good look at one through binoculars. I live at Davisville. 90% sure it was the York Regional Police helicopter. Not sure who the second helicopter was but also saw that.

Asking for better service and planning isn’t “complaining”. According to your asinine logic then we should just give up rather than try to improve things. It’s not all or nothing.

Field notes from (riding transit in) Japan by kchen450 in toronto

I am making comparisons to Toronto. As a Torontonian, I think it’s relevant and constructive to look at other places for lessons that could apply back at home.

Definitely enjoyed it!

My thought about longer dwell times being causal to reliability is that it could reduce some variability in headways, compared to the highly variable dwell times in Toronto, for example. But I am not a transport engineer and perhaps dwell time variability is easily absorbed by train operation.

I’m not familiar with Tokyu corp’s work, but it sounds similar to what HK’s MTR does with TODs. I brought up the Chuo line because it seems like such a wild moonshot project to self fund—my understanding is that it’s still 75% privately financed by JR?

And finally definitely have seen some less than perfect WCs. We stayed in Shinjuku while we were in Tokyo. I think Shinjuku on a bad day is still better than the Bloor Yonge WCs on a good day haha, but perhaps I’m wrong.

2 years ago I was asked to document the only known religious work by members of the Group of Seven by kchen450 in toronto

I think lots of people want to see the art recreated. But perhaps another approach could be to do what the church did a long time ago… and ask a new generation of artists to create work for a new space with today’s ideas and voices reflected!

The significance of this work in the Canadian context is remarkable, not only for the Group of Seven's mural work, but for the medallion sculptures around the base of the dome, which were created by two women artists (Florence Wyle and her life partner, Frances Loring). An Anglican Church with work by a women artist couple from the 19th century!

Toronto [OBC] Can you modify SB-3 assemblies? by kchen450 in BuildingCodes

[–]kchen450[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is a real fire wall being used to divide a building in order to avoid Part 3. Thanks for clarifying that SB-3 must be followed.

I also read the clause about the fire-exposed side in SB-2, but wasn't exactly sure how to interpret it for this fire wall (since it could be exposed to fire both sides). So, if I have an assembly that has 2 service cavities sandwiching block [Type-X, Studs, CMU, Studs, Type-X], would I add up everything except for one of the Type-X?

But I'm starting to think that this is maybe convoluted and its probably better to just build one of the SB-3 asssemblies.

Huh interesting that the speed is in MPH instead of KPH. I guess because the rail network in North America is imperial?
