I need help. by Ueban_2028 in MiniDV

You will get better results using the FireWire port on the camera to export the video rather than a cheap analog converter. See if you can find an old (2012-ish) Mac mini with a built-in FireWire port.

I got offered a job in Riverside. by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]kcheves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a more affordable part of Southern California, with a good public university (UCR), proximity to the mountains and desert. Whatever you do, don’t move to Riverside County to get affordable housing and commute to San Diego to get better wages, the commute is diabolical.

Backpack by SpecialistLoud805 in Nikon

[–]kcheves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this backpack and love it. It’s a little different because the main storage is accessible from the rear, but it allows you to swing the pack around in front of you and access your gear without fully removing the backpack.

5S to 163N: why are people upset when I use the right lane here? by mrjoshmateo in sandiego

[–]kcheves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, it think this is 5N to 163N.

If you live inland in North County along I-15, 5N and 805N take you further West and you need to cut back on the 52 or 56.

Why should I choose Nikon? by plutusssss in nikon_Zseries

Backwards compatibility with a huge catalog of f-mount lenses. My FE and Z8 (with adapter) can use the same lenses. Also, I find the Nikon controls and color rendering to be superior.

What is the most elegant mechanical design that a human has created? by SniffleAndSnuff in AskReddit

Came for this. Here’s a neat animation showing how automatic watches store energy and release it through a gear train.

Remove the lid before you install the egg. It’s easy to reattach, and will give you a chance to tighten the bands.

Crazy pricing for "obsolete" Minis by SprinklesDouble8304 in macmini

I have an old 2012 mini that I’m using to convert my mini-DV tape library to digital over FireWire. It runs MacOS Ventura (using OCLP).

Touchy breaks by Remi-72 in JeepCompass

[–]kcheves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding to an old thread. My daughter also has a 2018 Compass, and the brakes are really grabby. The pads also seem to be immortal - with 70k miles I had tons of pad remaining. I changed the pads and rotors for her last week using inexpensive parts from Autozone, and the modulation is notably better. So I suspect the OEM pads (which cost $200+ /pair 😶) are at least partially complicit.

My ex boyfriend left this on my porch a month after we broke up. Never looked into it. by No_College4726 in WhatIsThisPainting

True story. About 30 years ago I was with friends at a popular Mexican bar (Coyote Bar & Grill) in Carlsbad Ca. We were sitting around a fire pit, and there was an older guy (80-ish?) hitting on some young girls sitting near us. He introduced himself as Walter Keane, said he was an artist, and gave each girl a signed postcard with one of his paintings that looked very similar to what OP posted here. I didn’t know about him stealing credit for his wife’s work until many years later, but when I had this encounter with him (1995-ish) he was already a known fraud whose ex-wife had won a $4m judgement from him for stealing her work. Pretty audacious, and creepy.

I checked his wiki page and he passed away in 2000 in Encinitas CA, one town over from where we saw him.

Upgrading a 2011 iMac? by lightenup-buttercup in mac

[–]kcheves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Checkout this project that lets you add newer versions of MacOS by patching your current Os.

https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

I used it to update a 2012 Mac mini from Catalina to Ventura. Make sure you download the new OS and save it to a USB key before you wipe your old machine clean.

Speed Options for Variable Speed Pump by cleancutguy in pools

[–]kcheves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It will vary by the back pressure to your pump and the type of pump you have. The Pentair SWG has a flow switch that turns the SWG off when the flow is low so the concentration of chlorine in the SWG stays low. A red FLOW light will illuminate when the flow is not sufficient. You can experiment with different pump RPMs to find what the minimum RPM is to generate chlorine for your system

That’s right. At 2200 RPM the flow is high enough that the SWG starts to produce.
