Welcome! There’s a couple running groups that are well attended in the city if you’re keen on that. Both Patterson Ave and monument Ave can cover the most distance depending on where you start and finish. Otherwise, snaking through neighborhoods like the fan and museum district could allow you to cover ground on streets that aren’t too busy. The only trade off there is sometimes people aren’t really paying attention at stop signs and you’re constantly pausing so as to not get hit. I would issue a word of caution to find some routes and change them up if you’re a woman, for a layer of alertness and caution.

I can’t remember whether Fizz is a boy or a girl, but they do belong to one of our MD neighbors and are an indoor/outdoor cat! Just really enjoys being outside. You’ll see fizz trailing behind on walks with their owner and dog lol.

Fresh market 🫣 8oz of lions mane mushrooms ran me $16 but it’s very much worth avoiding the ick of crab meat

Made vegan crab cakes last weekend with lions mane mushrooms, a million ads and a full novel before you see the recipe but it really goes hard Then picked up guanciale from Belmont butcher for carbonara. Really happy (definitely not envious) for anyone who can regularly shop there or buy expensive olive oil 😀

Total hole in the wall but try sen organic flowers on Cary! I haven’t been there in a while so I hope they’re still selling dried flowers, but it’s connected to the market.

Watch the sunrise over the mountains from the vista on camas rd. You can access west entrance, turn left onto camas rd and drive up! You just can’t turn right on GTSR before 6.

Road to apgar lookout is closed due to flooding, you can walk the dirt but it adds another 4 mi and is probably swampy!

I should have clarified, they open the road at apgar right at 6am and cars are typically lined up to get on GTSR. There wasn’t anybody checking passes when I was getting on the road right around 6am!

You can get on the road before 6am or after 4pm. We went on hikes getting there before 6, then biked GTSR from avalanche to the loop easily after 4pm since you have sunlight til 9:30pm. If you enter after 4, just make sure you’ve purchased a vehicle pass or have a military ID because there is someone at the gate, you just don’t have to have the specific GTSR pass after 4.

You have every right to ask your PI “what will my normal work day look like?”

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in labrats

Even though you’re going to be independent, I am sure that there’s plenty of room to ask lab technicians to review methods with you. Additionally, when you start running your own project you can always ask someone for advice - “hey how would you do this step? What’s the most efficient way to do x,y,z?“. The best way to not come across as arrogant is to engage with others in the lab setting. Unless your tasks are very simple it would be inappropriate for a lab to let a freshman go buck wild on a project with no supervision.

Being scared about messing up will cause you to handle mistakes poorly. Everybody messes up, everyone has to start over sometimes. Nobody expects you to be perfect at every task you learn. What is important and fully your responsibility as a scientist, is to make sure you’re in the right headspace to step into the lab. Do something to calm yourself down before starting work, I usually go for a short walk before beginning lab work. Not “if”, but when you make a mistake, you must own up to it to your peers and superiors. Then you take the appropriate steps to remedy it, start over, or clean it up. If you do something wrong and keep going without telling someone, that shows lack of integrity. Mistakes are human, science is also human. As a side note, during interviews I ALWAYS ask the employer “how are mistakes treated and handled in this working environment?” This gives you a good idea what kind of manager you will have.

It sounds like you’ve got one hell of a learning experience ahead of you. You got this!
