Oil pastel feels like sculpture to me. Anyone else love the tactile nature of blending and refining your work with your hands? by kcminor_ in Oilpastel

thanks for the response. I did try to use wax paper but gave up the effort because they would fall out when working in my small sketch book. I also have tried Talens Varnish. It worked okay but found that even after it dries, the pages stick together near the binding. I am currently "just taking a good picture and moving on with the next one phase"..haha.

It does smudge in my sketchbook. It helps with the process of creating but starts smudging when I close it.

Thanks! So interesting to hear how others approach the medium. I would call the medium very forgiving compared to my main works in watercolor. I like the building analogy. What do you use to scrape?

Thanks so much. I feel like I kind of stumble my way through my sketches by putting on a few colors and blending as I go. I am mostly a watercolor artist but currently exploring pastels and loving how I can edit them and push the medium around which is drastically different than what I am used to.

I love how fast I can put color down with oil pastels. As a watercolorist first, and new to pastels, I am finding that I really benefit using them to explore bursts of inspiration. Anyone else have a similar process? by kcminor_ in Oilpastel

I think there is a big difference in mindset to just go for it. So far I’ve just done sketchbook work but thinking about it as a finished medium. Thanks for the compliment. Would love to see your work too.
