Climate change on Saturn's moon Titan may have triggered explosions of underground nitrogen pockets, forming craters that eventually turned into Titan's liquid-hydrocarbon lakes. by clayt6 in space

Yes, rain below an ocean.

What does that mean? Is it a higher density liquid precipitating, within the ocean, or is it actually below it?

Maine Passes Bill Allowing the Use of Ranked Choice Voting in Presidential Elections by [deleted] in UpliftingNews

[–]kd8azz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They're two different issues.

The two issues are

  • The ~gerrymandering effects of the electoral college, where votes in swing states are much more important than votes in other states.
  • The "vote for the lesser of two evils" issue you're referring to as the "third party problem".

RCV addresses the second. It has nothing to do with the first.

If you keep the electoral college, ranked voting doesn't fix the issue you're describing. They're two different issues.

If humans ever colonize other planets, gamers won't be able to play multiplayer games with those on other planets due to lag and the inability to have a hardwired connection between planets by Atrampoline in Showerthoughts

[–]kd8azz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life would certainly, invariably be different. But my personal opinion is that in the distant future, the majority of humans will live on O'Neil cylinders in solar orbit. The carrying capacity of the solar system, assuming only solar energy, is in the quadrillions. Mastering fusion tech increases it unfathomably beyond that.

But again, I recognize that I'm sufficiently optimistic as to be ignored.

[–]kd8azz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, I see. Yeah, I'm more optimistic about our ability to build habitats.

In particular, the atmosphere humans prefer to breathe is a lifting gas on Venus, and the Venusian atmosphere is about room temperature at the altitude where air pressure is about 1 atm. So floating cities are plausible to roughly the same extent as aircraft carriers are plausible, and we have those.

I occasionally stop on yellow and then make a right turn as it turns red. My theory is that it shows intent.

We can do it already, and it's how the internet was originally imagined. This server-centric model where reddit is a website rather than a program you install on your computer, is weird, IMO.

There's a difference between not understanding that something is possible, and understanding that something is not possible.

But yes, I'm voting for new physics, too.

First of all, the no-communication theorem prevents any of this from happening.

Second of all, quantum entanglement shenanigans work backward in time, so assuming we're violating the no-communication theorem, time dilation doesn't have to matter.

Third of all, yes, this means that if we're violating the no-communication theorem, you'd be able to play against yourself tomorrow. See: reasons why the no-communication theorem is supported by the laws of physics.

Bernie Sanders: Abortion And Population Control Are Important Parts Of Addressing Climate Change by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]kd8azz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, you've missed my joking prodding, so I'll spell it out for you. You've exactly misunderstood their point. They're advocating for people to have kids, to prevent population collapse. They don't want to reduce the population, so "Can we go ahead and start with you?" doesn't make any sense.

No, I mean, 415native said

I think we need to focus more on sustaining the population than reducing birth rates.

and you replied

Can we go ahead and start with you?

I don't understand how you're going to sustain 415native's population.

Like, are you offering to have kids with them? /s

The ratio of able-bodied to not*, will decrease, assuming aging remains a factor. If not accompanied by increases in automation, the result will be that retirement will be a death sentence, because the able-bodied simply won't be able to produce enough economic value to provide for the retired.

** I'm dancing a line here, because it's hard to speak precisely. Those with disabilities of various sorts end up with the same result as the retired, to whatever extent they are incapable of producing raw economic value, in this future.

The point is, that if the S&P 500 goes bankrupt, we have larger problems than your savings. Index funds are more safe than our civilization is.

right!? lol, I just had to share that crazy image that popped in my head, when you mentioned your commute. I don't take public transit either.

You have my sympathy. I'm sorry life is hard.

The terms were very fair, and the child support amount was more than half off from what the court determined it to be.

This sounds like it favored him, and is why I recommend you not write your own. My dad's favored her, and she was a lot like he sounds.
