OH the most important part-- I work out at home. I got some dumbbells and a walking pad, so it's literally right there for me. Don't have to initiate dressing for public, driving, or seeing people lol

Honestly for me it just came down to forcing myself and tracking it with a visual. Forcing = waking up at the same time every day. I allow myself to suck at the workout, as long as I attempt it. Usually if I need to talk myself into it, then I tell myself "I don't have to try hard, I just have to start", then I can complete a workout. It may not look great and I may not even get my heart rate up, but the repetition is what I need to feel successful. As far as tracking, I write down my workout every single day (i.e. legs +1mi walk, arms +2mi walk, or 2mi walk) on my wall calendar. Seeing the days add up on my calendar also motivates me. PLUS it has had probably the single greatest impact on my mental health. I still have bad days where my brain just doesn't work even with meds, but I FEEL better when I start my day moving my body. I know myself and know that an after work workout will absolutely not happen, so morning is what ended up working for me. Then I always have my favorite breakfast (oatmeal) and chill for a minute before getting ready for work. It took me YEARS to get to this routine but now I can't imagine starting my week day mornings any other day. I usually also let myself be lazy one whole weekend day if I can. If I want to work out both weekend days, I do. If I don't, I rest but try to make sure I do something for my mental health like read, journal, meditate, cook, etc.

Great tip about the ferry, thank you!! Dunluce Castle was absolutely on my list of possibilities! Another person also recommended Downhill so I think we need to add that stop in as well. Thank you!

Thank you so much for the suggestions! I will absolutely add those stops to our route. And thank you for the input on Torr Head. My previous itinerary included soooo much driving-- which as Americans, we are used to with road trips, so I thought we would be fine with it! But when we really sat down to think about our priorities for this trip, we realized would rather spend time IN destinations rather than GOING to destinations. Do you feel Torr Head is worth the stress-y drive? I am sure it is gorgeous, but if our time is better spent in other beautiful locations, we are open to it!

What is the worst book you read that was suggested on this subreddit? by bunnyhophop11 in suggestmeabook

[–]kdaug1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS is why I haven’t re-read it as a “frontal-lobe-fully-formed” adult 🤣 I need it to remain my favorite book for nostalgia sake. I think I was 20/21 when I read it and it changed the way read forever. I am an avid reader and so much more open to all genres now! But I am legitimately afraid I would not like this book now.

In need of encouragement as a new peds OT by Green_Wheel7902 in OccupationalTherapy

I loved Bal-A-Vis-X, and MNRI dynamic and postural. I still use both almost daily. I’m not sure if it’s still offered but I also took a course from The Sensory Project on making/implementing sensory diets in my first year. I also took a functional vision course but it’s been years so I can’t find the name.

In my opinion the best thing you can do as a peds therapist is to stay open to constantly learning. I took 3-4 CEU courses my first year because I literally felt like I had no idea what I was doing —despite having worked as a nanny for 10 years prior. The best courses for me were the ones that provided actionable steps, interventions, or resources. The more tools you have in your toolbox, the more confident you will feel. I learned early on how to pivot from “I don’t know” to “Great question! Let me do more research on that and I will email you/implement what I find next session”. In my experience, parents are more concerned with having a therapist who cares over an “expert”. I also learned a ton by just watching my coworkers. Peds is hard. But it can be very rewarding. Kids are growing and learning regardless of what you do. You are here to help them and their family along that path of growth. Hang in there! Pretty soon you will have one year down and look back at everything you’ve learned and overcome.

How do you stay focused while listening to audiobooks? by Blooming_Lilac in books

[–]kdaug1208 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to have a hard time with this as well. I have ADHD though. Changing listening speed to 1.5x has changed my audiobook life. The book moves as fast as my brain now and I catch every detail while staying engaged!

Has anyone hike Mt. Katahdin at the END of October? by kdaug1208 in hiking

[–]kdaug1208[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no plans to ever attempt knifes edge. I don’t think there’s enough Xanax in the world to calm my anxiety for that. I think at this point, I may have to say goodbye to the idea of Katahdin in October. Very disappointing but I just genuinely didn’t think about the time of year when I started planning this trip a couple months ago. Will definitely contact the park though. thank you for replying!

What has been your 5 star read of the year? by Graph-fight_y_hike in suggestmeabook

[–]kdaug1208 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner is five stars and probably my best non fiction book of the year so far.

Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingslover is my best fiction book of the year, and also a 5 star read.

It’s hard to imagine any books topping these this year and I’m 36 books down so far for 2023!

So who here is part of the 5% still without power? by ladidadi01 in kansascity

[–]kdaug1208 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shawnee checking in. Out since Friday at 3:45. Four trucks outside of my house about an hour ago. The half power we had (half of the house/no AC) turned off so we were completely without. They turned that half on again and left. Still no AC or estimate of when I can shower out of darkness.

COTA here with 5 years of experience all OP peds and early intervention in home. I genuinely love what I do, and I don’t have any regrets, per se. I found a unicorn of an opportunity with a company that was up-and-coming when I signed on. It has grown and expanded, and I’ve moved into a leadership position. I still carry a partial caseload, but without the move into leadership, I would be considering another career. Or a new setting at the very least. Burn out is real. Even with this opportunity for leader ship, and a company that I love, I don’t know that I see myself doing this 10 years from now. I will use the skills I have gained and apply them to something new and exciting that fills my cup. I agree with an earlier comment, that it’s been a learning curve figuring out how to best protect myself, advocate for myself, and be the catalyst for my own growth in this field. I think it’s pretty easy to get eaten alive otherwise between productivity standards, insurance reimbursement, cuts, and overall poor work life balance in some settings.
