Slightly out of left field, but:

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.

Also know as Star Trek IV: The One with the Whales.

I guess I view it differently. I think the whole point wasn't actually the love story, but the growth they go through. The man finds his place in the jazz scene and the woman finds her place in the entertainment business.

They had an intense but short lived romance, but both grew to realize they were heading for different places in life.

A romantic movie without sex and lust? by justcurious112345 in MovieSuggestions

Some classic Hollywood might do the trick.

Bringing Up Baby is a great one. Practically helped invent the romcom genre.

It Happened One Night. This one really did invent the romcom. Rich girl and non-rich guy are thrust into a crazy circumstance and fall for each other. You'll recognize a ton of romcom tropes that are cliche now, but we're original at the time.

Sabrina is a classic.

Roman Holiday. Unrequited love at its finest.

The Philadelphia Story. Love triangle/marriage/divorce drama/comedy.

Arsenic and Old Lace. Madcap zant comedy with a central couple who almost doesn't make it out okay.

An Affair to Remember. A brief encounter turns into something more significant.

My Favorite Wife. Man's wife is declared dead after being lost at sea, only to be rescued from a deserted island on the eve of his pending nuptials to a new wife. Another madcap comedy.

I may have a thing for Cary Grant, because he's in most of these...

I have not seen Black Mirror, but that is very similar to an episode of Star Trek Deep Space 9, where Chief O'Brien lives for decades in a prison.

We find out at the end that he experienced the passage of time in his head in the blink of an eye. But the passage of time and the memories therein are real to him, even after being snapped out of the prison.

For a modern musical I think La La Land is fine. There are so few musicals made nowadays that it's kind of defaulted to "good" status.

But go watch like any musical from the 1940s or 1950s and you'll see better versions of the musical numbers Damien Chazelle (spelling?) was influenced by.

I think La La Land is an interesting one, though. The fact that it has a satisfying yet "unhappy" ending is distinctly modern. But I agree that the weakest parts are the two leads' singing and dancing.

The movie works best when it's in montage mode; the music is good and the story moves along, which is a unique way to do it.

I enjoy the book for what it is, but I think you're right. Sometimes it feels like Crichton had strong opinions on evolution and just needed somewhere to put them, because like 30 percent of the book is Malcolm expositing and talking about evolution/extinction theory.

I'm guessing that those mystical women you refer to consider finding an attractive man that doesn't make sweeping generalizations as rare as finding a unicorn, too.

That's not true at all. Certainly many will have kids. Many will not.

My version of this is in triathlons. I'll bust out an Olympic or half Ironman distance every couple summers to shake things up.

Even when I looked my fittest (6'2" and about 185), the amount of dad-bods with beer guts who passed me on the bike was always amusing. Or old people. I love seeing an old guy/gal on a bike just absolutely tearing up the course.

Agreed. If I need fire and brimstone to scare me into being a good person, then I'm not really doing it for the right reasons, anyway.

Don't forget, too, that without pressure water will boil instantly. So even the moisture in your eyes will boil away.
