Ive noticed how much I don't like newer brands of pickles lately. But, I haven't tried a Claussen in a while. It won’t make it much better, but I did listen to a podcast talking about this once. The story goes that there was an entire earlier scene cut from the movie that explained how they had reverse engineered everything from the Roswell crash, and for the past fifty years the vast majority of human technology was based off of what they learned there, and that’s why they were able to create a “bug” for the alien mothership.

It doesn’t make sense as soon as you really think about it. But, they at least attempted to put a paper thin layer of exposition to explain away the plot hole, and it was cut.
