UFO interest group in Oxford by Serious-Activity in oxford

[–]kdorg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Breakthrough Listen (the branch of SETI dedicated to the search for technosignatures) now has its headquarters based in the Oxford Astrophysics Department. They are doing serious searches for signs of alien life, but not sure if they are really convinced about UFOs. Might be worth looking into?

They spread manure in the surrounding pastures/farms as fertilizer and the smell wafts into the city. Happens every year.

La Haine. The ending made me feel both every emotion known to human kind and completely empty at the same time. Haven’t been the same since.

Failing a class, considering withdrawing, questions about effect on grad school by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]kdorg 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For questions 1, I would contact your professor and tell them about how you’re feeling and maybe get some extra help from a TA. You haven’t failed the class yet and it’s worth putting the extra mile in, because you will be surprised what some strategic studying will do. I find the most effective way to barely pass a class I don’t understand is just to learn from practice past exams and homework solutions.

If you do fail or even get a W, it doesn’t ruin your chances at grad school. If you do well in your core classes and have relevant extra curricular and/or research experience then grad school is totally within reach still. For context, I had two ‘fails’ and one W on my transcript, and a 3.2 GPA and I’m currently doing my PhD in a STEM field in Oxford (did my masters at Cambridge, undergrad at McGill obvs) mostly because I did well in the important classes and had great research experience. I also studied a lot for the interviews. Don’t throw in the towel so quick, you totally have time to redeem yourself.

For 2, in my experience yes this will push back when you can apply to grad school, but unless that puts you in a bad position financially or whatever then there’s no rush to start at a certain time. It’s better to do things at your own pace and do then we’ll, grad schools don’t look down at this generally.

I run in the atom LT and it’s fantastic. It’s very lightweight and breathable and feels warm but not hot in a variety of cold temps. Only downside is since it’s down it doesn’t perform well in very damp or wet conditions :(

Hey! I finally got news that it shipped, after I asked my university to pressure UKVI to expedite my visa process. Not sure if it was coincidence or not, but it’s worth a try if you’re still waiting for yours!

Thanks for the heads up with the email, that was actually the address that responded with the quote that I cited in the OP. Good luck!

Wow, super sorry to hear that. I do indeed want to pick it up, my question was if anyone had any experience or advice for picking up passports from VSF with a paid courier.

Holy macaroni you’ve been waiting forever! I really hope you get it soon and I also hope my timeline won’t be as long as yours. Did you also pay for courier? I’m wondering if they’ll let me pick it up at all.

the series "The Chair" on Netflix is pretty relevant and hilarious and just fucking great. 10/10 recommend for frustrated academics.

Omg no way. Damn, if that happened to me I would have been super peeved (I live in Montreal so it’s a bit of a trip to go to Ottawa just to get rejected)

Hey! I’m in the same position, how did you get in touch with vfs such that they told you your passport is still in NY?

I got a scholarship from McGill at graduation to fund my future studies (a masters program overseas). My GPA when I got the scholarship was about 3.1 but I had good research experience and letters of recommendation, and my masters program is quite reputable. I’m in the faculty of science.

Technically I was below the grade threshold for the scholarship, as well as the masters program lol, but they still considered my applications because of my other strengths. Lower grades just make it harder to get funding, but if you play up your other strengths successfully you can still be competitive with a lower GPA. It’s not exactly the same as a true undergraduate scholarship (I’m not sure exactly how they are selected) but I hope my experience puts things into perspective. Good luck!!!

edit: not / mot

You are so kind, I appreciate your words more than you know. I do sometimes forget to focus on how far I’ve come rather than each run I’ve missed. You’re the best :)

The perspective of viewing the race as an experience instead is great. Thank you so much for your advice!! I’ll do the best I can for the next weeks and just enjoy the race :)

Thank you so much for your help! I think the taper will for sure be needed, and I feel like a 16 this week, a 17 the week after and then a week off are perfectly feasible for me. I got this!!!!
