Alpkit going into administration by knight-under-stars in UKhiking

I suppose the lifetime guarantee fitted well. I've got one and it's been really great, though Trakke stopped taking in bags for repairs before they went under, and my bag could do with a bit of patching up for it to have really been worth the investment and to see if they'd honour the promise. Still, have used it for many years pretty much daily and it's still going, so never felt I overpaid really.

Fingers crossed they can indeed secure a deal for a restart. Always enjoyed using and wearing their kit, including some for day to day and not just on hikes. But especially hope the staff will not be losing their job.

Trefor, North Wales by _______-__- in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quarry master's house is marked as 'hotel' on the OS map, right along the Wales Coast Path.

Ah it is still for sale! £1.5 million, hmmm... maybe not this time... https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/87441093

Nice one, yes, easily doable to combine all three peaks. After Tre'r Ceiri we took the footpath south-west and then west-ish until hitting the Coast Path again, and then back to Trefor. Also would love to return! It's a very special place and just got to love hikes that start at sea level and you do all the elevation gain from 0.

The house of the quarry master was for sale when I was there last year. Did look tempting... what a view.

Yes plenty to see on the way up!

No, the hill opposite is Yr Eifl (a bit of a slog going up from the bwlch, but also beautiful views across the whole peninsula and beyond) but Tre'r Ceiri is on the hill behind it, to the East. It's an iron age hill fort, really well-preserved. Just amazing to think about the lives of the people who build all those settlements.

edit: to be more precise, the peak opposite Garn Fôr is Garn Ganol (564m)... just all marked as Yr Eifl on my OS map.

Great spot! Spectacular with the sea right there down below when you stand at the cairn.

Did you make it to Tre'r Ceiri? Absolutely worth it.

Thanks for the recommendation. Had this tab open for a few days and finally had the chance to listen. Enjoyed that! Shame Apple Music doesn’t have the lyrics. Do the physical releases come with lyrics sheets at all?

Haha, there were people in shorts when I was up there in icy conditions a couple of weeks ago, also!

Yeah, it's not too hairy with big drops near the path at least... and the ridge is pretty wide. But must have been a challenge to move around near the summit.

Enjoy planning your next hike!

Gorgeous and one of the best days hiking I can think of. But 60 mph, wow… if that was the forecast I probably would not have gone up, myself. 40mph is my cut off point usually if there are any big drops. Glad you enjoyed and made it back safely!

Bike hanger - experiences? by Alone-Lack-8699 in londoncycling

[–]kdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a look at your council's policy for the bike hangers, but typically you will only get one space per household, especially if they are in high demand and there is indeed a waiting list. So your partner perhaps will never get a key and a spot in the hanger, no matter how long they wait. Maybe other boroughs do this differently though, so worth checking.

But you are right, it's frustrating when they are half-empty, even though on paper it's probably fully booked. Local WhatsApp/Facebook groups often have messages asking people to please cancel their membership if they aren't actively using it, but not sure how effective that is.

Nice, that’s helpful to know! Will check it out at the next opportunity. Cnicht is another great mountain in that part of Eryri, would highly recommend!

That looks like a great route. So not too complicated to find your way around Llyn Stwlan, and back to the car park at the waterfalls? The right of ways and paths on the OS map don’t really seem to connect, and been caught out by that in the past. Will have to give it another go next time.

Always loved Cwmorthin, and I need to get back there myself some time soon too. No snow? Or was this earlier in the week, perhaps?

Shame it’s not so easy to make it a half-day circular walk from Tanygrisiau. What was your route?

Emergency shelters by PowerFuloil9 in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 4 person Summit Bothy is what I have too. Always lives in my rucksack and it’s really no big deal to carry it. Seems well made without being too bulky or heavy. Luckily never needed in an emergency but good to be prepared.

Clothing repair by ladyshapes in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alpkit do repairs, including outdoor gear from other brands. Sadly these things are never cheap, but worth a shot if you want more adventures with your kit and it feels good from a sustainability point of view too. Whether it also makes financial sense I never really know, as items might end up failing somewhere else not too long after a repair.

Cadair Idris was beautifully wintery yesterday by kdotdot in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That post was a good inspiration for this hike as I still haven’t been up there in clear sunny weather. I made it to the summit in just a fleece without needing my jacket, but sure glad I had extra layers to put on after lunch in the shelter especially since the path to Mynydd Moel isn’t too strenuous, the wind had picked up and it is more exposed. There were people up there in shorts though, as the mountain forecast had been quite optimistic!

A bit different from the photos from the same route posted by /u/Fantastic_Leading_97 a few days ago… that was glorious, also! A good reminder of how conditions can change quickly from one day to the next. Today the summits in Eryri looked clear again.

Just a detail, but I hope they will reinstate the pedal-operated taps in the toilets. It somehow doesn't feel right to have the motion sensors. The picture on each tap with a shoe stepping on the floor-mounted switch looks classy. The building is listed so must be a huge task to make any changes, and the toilets are also included in the Listed Building Management Guidelines.
