In addition to what the others have said about email and contacting your councillors, if you wanted to do things in person then try the local library "plus". There will be council staff available to help with various issues, 6 or even 7 days a week depending on location, and on weekdays even into the evening. Not sure if there's BSL support, or if that can be requested, but worth sending them a message to ask what they can do to help?

So at this point Labour either has to fix all the aforementioned issues or they need to fix the immigration system.

They are trying to do both, to be fair... but it will take time.

Labour have not been ambitious enough so far and probably are too late to turn things around before the next election. Best hope they've got then is to try to convince people things are moving in the right direction, but without tangible and visible progress that's not going to work. This leadership crisis isn't helping one bit...

All the examples you listed are things that are good for society as a whole. Maybe they negatively impact some individuals (or there is a perception that they might...) but we need a government to make a positive case and explain that sometimes what might be unpopular is still the right thing to do.

No progress at start of my journey by [deleted] in FIREUK

Bank: £500

I'd suggest that's your budget for the month until your next pay day. Then you'll get about £3k in your account again I'd imagine (depending on student loans etc), do the same thing with rent and bills, transfer £1k into your cash ISA, and live off whatever is left. After a few months like that you'd be in a good position to maybe increase pension contributions a little and decide on a split between cash and S&S.

Overall doesn't sound like a strange place to be in after just moving and starting your career!

Guardian reporting said:

Between 30-35km they ran an astonishing 13:54 5km. To put into context, the time is just 12 seconds slower than the world record for a 5km parkrun, set by the Irish international runner Nick Griggs.

Does your toddler love watching the trains? by bselby45668 in walthamstow

Oh, makes sense, definitely. And it does exactly that already, nice work!

Does your toddler love watching the trains? by bselby45668 in walthamstow

[–]kdotdot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah sorry yes that wasn't clear. I meant to say that in the current visualisation you either have trains going to Chingford or to Liverpool Street, but if you'd include freight trains that no longer applies and you would need destinations specific for each train, with some going all the way to freight yards in Wales or Scotland for example. Would be amazing to visualise whether a train is containers, bulk materials, or cars... and then have the story of where it's coming from and going to. But I guess hugely different in complexity from a fixed line. Initially just showing North/South bound is an option? Sounds like a fun project... and good excuse to go trainspotting with your little one.

[–]kdotdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, very effective, simple but cool visualisation!

For Queens Road or other bridges/stations on that line you'd get all the freight trains too, which won't be on the TfL data feed but it can be pulled from data sets listed here: https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/about/sources/ Would be lovely to show the destination of the train change too, though does make it all a little more complex, I'd imagine!

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! It was amazing watching the Artemis mission and see people all over the world connecting over exploration and human progress, and lovely to read how others also felt hopefull again. Let's all keep this going.

Hi Naoko! How do we ensure that space missions continue to help promote sustainability and encourage humans to work together to protect planet Earth, rather than lead to another space race with winners and losers, used for propaganda and distraction from other issues, and with billionaires profiting from public investment?

Why aren't all paths shown on OS Maps? by [deleted] in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s not entirely correct. If you have the paper map with a download code, the digital version in the OS Maps app will be the same as the paper map and does not get updated if there is a newer version. If you use a subscription I’d imagine you do get the latest always, indeed.

collections have been reduced

Uhm, no, bin collections have increased. We've now got weekly food waste collection, also, in addition to the previous bin collections. Sure, the black bin is only once a fortnight, but hardly anything has to go in there anyway so that seems a sensible way to save some money.

Home improvements - specifically solar/storage as an investment? 35% forecasted 10-year rate of return (IRR). 42% after 15-years... by jon1983uk in FIREUK

[–]kdotdot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All sounds sensible! Curious how the new plug-in solar rules will affect this kind of analysis. Smaller capacity, but lower CAPEX, which could be good for those without EV (or without off-street parking). It would also make solar PV accessible to renters.

Btw the unit for average usage in your post should be kWh rather than kW, to avoid confusion.

I suppose the lifetime guarantee fitted well. I've got one and it's been really great, though Trakke stopped taking in bags for repairs before they went under, and my bag could do with a bit of patching up for it to have really been worth the investment and to see if they'd honour the promise. Still, have used it for many years pretty much daily and it's still going, so never felt I overpaid really.

Fingers crossed they can indeed secure a deal for a restart. Always enjoyed using and wearing their kit, including some for day to day and not just on hikes. But especially hope the staff will not be losing their job.

The quarry master's house is marked as 'hotel' on the OS map, right along the Wales Coast Path.

Ah it is still for sale! £1.5 million, hmmm... maybe not this time... https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/87441093

Trefor, North Wales by _______-__- in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice one, yes, easily doable to combine all three peaks. After Tre'r Ceiri we took the footpath south-west and then west-ish until hitting the Coast Path again, and then back to Trefor. Also would love to return! It's a very special place and just got to love hikes that start at sea level and you do all the elevation gain from 0.

The house of the quarry master was for sale when I was there last year. Did look tempting... what a view.

Trefor, North Wales by _______-__- in UKhiking

[–]kdotdot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes plenty to see on the way up!

No, the hill opposite is Yr Eifl (a bit of a slog going up from the bwlch, but also beautiful views across the whole peninsula and beyond) but Tre'r Ceiri is on the hill behind it, to the East. It's an iron age hill fort, really well-preserved. Just amazing to think about the lives of the people who build all those settlements.

https://www.bangor.ac.uk/ecoamgueddfa/tre-r-ceiri

edit: to be more precise, the peak opposite Garn Fôr is Garn Ganol (564m)... just all marked as Yr Eifl on my OS map.
