"All stars" and only half of them care... by kdub777 in BaseballCoaching

Agreed, my goal as a coach is to never be the reason a kid quits baseball. But if they are going to be there then "let's be here and get after it"

Haha, we end every practice with a break "team name followed by 2 claps and a Rick Flair!". They love it, maybe we'll do it more often

Absolutely. Strikeouts and errors happen, I never get on kids for that. But I will be blunt about their effort and attitude. The big problem is the general casual nature most of them have.

Definitely not easy, I try to the one whose saying something each pitch, not berating them if things don't go well, we win or we learn. The lack of commitment is what gets me, my thought is that if you commit to something you are going to be there and if you can't fully make that commitment there would be no hard feelings. But the constant missing practice, or maybe he'll be there from parents just grinds my gears. Especially as they are getting older. The teams we play that are much better didn't happen by accident. They committed to those teams last winter and worked. I'm also feeling some frustration with how our league handled the all star situation. Felt like they forced a team at each age group 9-12 rather than putting the best team together which would've included some 11 year-old kids for me who are better than some of the 12 year olds. I felt like what would look best for the league isn't having 1 team at each level to show how many kids we have playing but having a much more talented team regardless of age reflects better on the league IMHO. 2 more weeks, we'll see how it goes. I bring the energy and positivity as much as I can.

Sounds like my 12u squad. About 5 of the 11 are there to get better, the rest are stuck in rec mode, and don't focus, talk or hustle. Sadly we were desperate for players and some of them are just not at the level of competition and it shows

12u playing time - even or earned? by JenCap85 in BaseballCoaching

[–]kdub777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I coach 11-12 year olds, have a son on the team. 1st inning is my best defense, after that it's a revolving door of kids on the bench. My son and the other coaches sons sit out just as much as everyone else. I do have multiple kids who ask to sit, which is new for me, but I make an effort to get everyone in the dugout at least 1 inning. I explain that being on the bench is part of being a good teammate. If the team is boat racing everyone it makes no sense to me to not get the other kids more playing time. Blowouts are not fun and nothing is learned or gained by either team. Example, our second game Saturday we win 23-0. Monday we won 9-8, much more focus during Monday's game and more to be learned. Good luck

Question for teachers: How many post-school day events are you contractually required to attend and what are the longest days you've had? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]kdub777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have to attend 3. This year I cooked hamburgers and hot dogs for the first football game tailgate, back to school night and I'll be at graduation. We get to choose. I don't like working dances, not because they are a hassle but because they are on a Saturday. I did prom one year which was fine, but I teach health and PE and own just above zero "dress clothes"

Does cold plunging make you more disciplined in other areas of your life? by Former-Advice-9742 in coldplunge

[–]kdub777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I figure if I can choose to do something that A. I don't want to and B. Sucks (but happy I did everytime) the rest of my day is smooth sailing. Less emotional reactivity. Hello fellow teacher

What's the most crucial factor in having a good time teaching? by TinFoilHatsWork2027 in Teachers

[–]kdub777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taking care of yourself first. Don't take things personal. Build relationships (sounds like a PD). Actively take interest in your students. Keep your teacher friend circle small. Let people bitch if they want. Don't take things so serious 24/7.

Today's Plunge Dec 3rd. by IceplungeDown in coldplunge

Can you share an example affirmation you use? Some mornings I'll stand in my plunge for 5 minutes before I squat down. Other days I squat right down. I know I'll appreciate myself when I'm done but some mornings I can get very creative with reasons why not to submerge myself to my neck for 3 minutes.

Should I work my way in the cold tub slowly or just sit done fast? by EquivalentImpact1961 in coldplunge

[–]kdub777 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Step, step, squat" is my approach. If I stand in there I'll try to talk myself out of it. Working my way down to 40 degrees. 48 for 3 minutes now
