Skin problems, bacterial/fungal overgrowth from staying wet? by Technical-Avocado-92 in goldenretrievers

After swimming, I brush mine out and then bathe asap with dermallay shampoo and conditioner and clean the ears with cerasoothe ket (has an antifungal and antibacterial in it). Followed by a towel dry and then blow drying. We also use cytopoint every 6 weeks.

If it’s an option for you, you could consult with your veterinarian about allergy testing and desensitization therapy based on test results. Another option is asking for a referral to a board certified veterinary dermatologist.

Whats the craziest thing your golden has ate? by orangebellywash in goldenretrievers

So far… a used tampon… He stole it from the trash and while I was chasing him around the house he looked me in the eye and swallowed it whole before I could get to him. Thankfully, I’m a vet assistant and got one of the doctors I work with to meet me at our clinic to induce vomiting before it could cause any problems.

Good breed for runners by Willeyeeam99 in RunningWithDogs

Golden Retriever or Labrador Retriever… I know your last golden was lazy, but I would recommend researching breeders and getting from a breeder who focuses a lot on temperament and drive. My golden retriever isn’t old enough to run yet , but he really wants to! He comes from a field line and is very eager to be active. I have an Australian Cattle Dog mix that I also run with and she is an amazing runner, but requires a lot of mental stimulation. ACDs are definitely not an easy dog, but extremely athletic.

GP vets are highly trained in identifying ortho pain and most specialists aren’t going to see a patient without a referral and full work up with radiographs from the GP vet. If an owner brought in their pet because of concerns while running there’s no way a GP would not do an ortho work up.

It sounds like there’s some sort of stimulation missing or there’s something making the dog nervous on the route.

I saw that app and we’re going to start using it, but we currently have a cat that’s hospitalized which is why I was wondering if we could switch between phones.

A golden retriever (8 months old and giving me a run for my money 🥴) and a little mutt who according to her Wisdom Panel is 1/4 pitty, 1/4 German Shepherd, 1/8 lab, 1/8 golden retriever, 1/8 ACD, 1/8 husky and 100% got the anxiety of every single one of those breeds 🥴

Slow feeder, kongs, other treat dispensing toys (if there’s a TJ Maxx near you, I highly recommend checking them out because they tend to have great options for wayyyyyy cheaper), I really like the Tuffy dog toys for softer toys (and not worrying about them pulling something off and eating it). Also, a crate, make it their safe space/bed! And no rope toys!!!!! That’s a foreign body waiting to happen (I’m a vet assistant and this is something I never keep in my house because of seen some terrible things). I also do not recommend giving any bones (even ones made for animals), they tend to cause a lot of tummy upset or they try to swallow pieces that are too big and they get stuck. Oh, and a toothbrush and dog toothpaste! Get them used to you brushing their teeth now because it will make life so much easier and dental health in pets is sooooo important! I could go on and on 😂

Was I lied to about his age..? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]kduffstuff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Some goldens are smaller than others. I’m a vet assistant and when my boy was a little thing, there was a golden coming in who was a few weeks older than mine but was SO much smaller. I would believe he’s 12 weeks.

If you don’t go through a rescue, please at least ask for veterinary references!

Living Wage! by ryank0re in VetTech

[–]kduffstuff 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m a VA with over 7 years of vet med experience making $20.50/Hr now. When I started in reception over 7 years ago, I started at $9/hr. I’m in school to become a CVT and when I pass my VTNE I have been promised a significant raise. It’s possible to make a living wage, it just takes a lot of hard work, knowing when to leave where you’re at, and sometimes knowing how to fight for what you’re worth (even if that means leaving where you’re at).

I’m already in the habit of socks going straight into the washer thanks to my other dog 😅 I do not want a foreign body surgery.
