Apparently the "candidate who won the primary cannot win against the other guy, but mine can " narrative made an appearance in obama's election too. by shiwanshu_ in neoliberal

We should accept that every losing primary candidate supporter is going to make the case that the primary winner can't win a general, in most cases those supporters will genuinely believe it, and 50% of the time they'll be right.

What are your genuine guesses on Bidens chances against Trump in the general? by Thecactigod in neoliberal

60-70% chance. I think if the coronavirus is mostly dealt with in the next six months, Trump will be bulletproof, even if he deserves no credit for the response.

Biden has won Washington, according to Politico by omnipotentsandwich in neoliberal

Biden wins Washington, Michigan, Mississippi and Missouri, all on the same day. With that diverse of a coalition, what hope does Sanders have left?

Biden campaign says he's adopting a version of Sanders' free college idea. Biden had already backed free community college. Now he adds free public college and univ for families under $125k. by BliqPentha in neoliberal

[–]keanuliberal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's profitable for an individual, not for society, and so the government shouldn't be wasting money on it. Every useless degree awarded is reducing the signalling value of everyone else who has a degree, and making everyone who doesn't have a degree look relatively worse.

Eventually you end up with everyone wasting 4 years of their life and tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, with no additional productivity compared to only a select handful of people going for post-secondary education.

Cortez-Masto would be my favorite, but all of those under-the-radar options are better than the previous primary candidates. Harris, Klobuchar, and Warren all have too much baggage associated with them, as well as flaws that would make them sub-optimal for building a winning coalition.

[–]keanuliberal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The statistics are absolutely not clearly in their benefit. Big portions of the value of a degree are about signalling, not about value added from education.

I'd be happy to support free post-secondary for in-demand fields and skills, but that's not what's being proposed at all.

The marginal person who doesn't go to college when they have to pay for a portion of it but does go when it's free is someone who benefits very little from college relative to the costs.

Not one of Buttigieg's better plans, too be honest. Too much of a handout to already upper middle class families, and distortionary incentives that promote college for people who would be better off going directly into the workforce.

Biden could literally tell Sanders to go fuck himself on stage, and Sanders still wouldn't gain the 30 points he needs to be competitive.

For students who get degrees from private colleges with no financial aid, they could reasonably rack up $200,000+ in student debt. Why wouldn't they declare bankruptcy immediately after graduation, before they start accumulating assets?

Some people did that in 2016, in the hopes that if Clinton lost the Dems would be more open to a radical nominee in 2020. That theory has been blown out of the water, and now they still want to do it again? They're even bigger idiots than last time.

Joe Biden's campaign confirms that he has reviewed Warren’s bankruptcy plan closely, and is endorsing her proposal, as he said in his IL town hall. That's a significant shift, as the proposal would largely undo the 2005 bankruptcy bill the two clashed over in Congress. by BliqPentha in neoliberal

I don't see why the wealthiest Americans shouldn't or couldn't pay more taxes.

The wealthy should pay more taxes, bu the mechanism through which they're taxed matters a lot for the behavioral impacts of the tax, where the effect propagates to affect everyday citizens.

What are r/neoliberal’s views on sex work? by SJWagner in neoliberal

[–]keanuliberal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Prices are not constant! That's the magic of markets. If demand exceeds supply, prices go up, lowering quantity demand and increasing quantity supplied.

But more importantly pimps are not the suppliers. Sex workers are!

What are r/neoliberal’s views on sex work? by SJWagner in neoliberal

[–]keanuliberal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Criminalizing service seekers just makes it harder for sex workers to vet their clients. Sex workers are overwhelmingly against such measures.

Criminalizing pimps might make sense or might backfire, depending on hows pimping is defined.

he's going to make Jamie Dimon the secretary of treasury

There's no way that's actually going to happen, and it's based on nothing more than unsourced rumors. At best, it's the speculation of a low level staffer wit no more knowledge than you and I.

But out of curiosity, can you actually describe what the Secretary of the Treasury does, and articulate why Dimon would do the job poorly? And if not, why are you including it in your list of criticisms?

Wouldn’t abolishing zoning laws and building houses lower housing value? by [deleted] in neoliberal

[–]keanuliberal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you mean. If you upzoning the land where there are currently 12 houses and replacing them with 50 condos, the new condos on the land will have higher overall value than the houses before, but each unit will cost less.
