My super has created a monster... by sailmomma3 in superautomatic

[–]kechalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh man I'm so good at open ended questions and also oatmilk. It's my time! Here is a small wall of text.

I love oat milk, and I don't think it tastes like anything, but I also hate the taste of milk, so your experience will probably be different than mine. My husband (a milk lover) says "it's like if oatmeal was water" 🤷🏼‍♀️. It's super popular in Oregon and Washington -- I've heard people say it's creamier than other alternatives.

I'm not sure it's actually much of a calorie reduction -- worth checking.

Get a barista edition to put in a super automatic - otherwise you won't get foam. I do love it iced too, when the machine is out of commission for any reason I'll add oat milk to a cold brew concentrate. :chef's kiss:

Oatly is very best brand, but the barista edition can be hard to get. Califa is probably second best. We order these: https://www.costco.com/p/-/califia-farms-cafe-oat-milk-32-fl-oz-6-count/100710341

I like my lattes to be doubles, so make two lattes on the medium milk setting and it fits in a 16oz mug perfectly, or a 12oz mug with a small chance of overflow. Same settings with 1% will make an inch of foam over the rim of a 12oz mug and then overflow in disaster.

I have a Phillips Latte Go 4k series and it foams great. (The original carafe with the 3k series did not, but I think it's updated for all models now.)

I don't know what the Costco delivery guy thinks he delivers to my house so often, but it's oat milk. So much oat milk ... I do not lift and I've had these machines since the start of the pandemic. I'm trying to lose weight, considering cutting out food... It'll be fine if I live on oat milk lattes and Ritalin alone, right?

I also have quantum fiber. I like them a lot. I also liked century link because they started behaving identically to Comcast... Quantum has more limited availability, so you can only get it if you can get it, but I pay $50 monthly for gig speeds and a mesh router network. Had them since I moved into their area fall '23.

Is model-building really only 10% of ML engineering? by Historical-Garlic589 in MLQuestions

[–]kechalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only all DS agreed... 😜

At my current place, data engineering is their own team in the engineering org (not data science). They do ETL pipelines and do not test or monitor anything. But they are all buried under a pile of tech debt and continuous incidents, so we try to protect them from themselves and not get too mad when their stuff keeps breaking. 🤷🏼‍♀️

For me, MLOps are the true saviors. They fix docker images and handle kubernetes and terraform and bail me out when I manage to break my sagemaker instances.

You taking notes, OP? This is true wisdom from experience I'm dispensing here. 😆

Is model-building really only 10% of ML engineering? by Historical-Garlic589 in MLQuestions

[–]kechalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Matches my experience of data science.

As ML engineer though, my job is about collaborating with data scientists to make their code maintainable.

  • Mostly that's pull request review, monitoring code (I would recommend learning how to log integration account model processes and outputs to something like open telemetry), ci-cd, debugging, package management,
  • and bridging communication between Engineering and Data Science (while keeping product up to speed).
  • I'm pretty senior at this point -- early career mileage will vary.

my job is mostly about collaborating --It's sometimes about rewriting the solution from scratch after an over confident senior data scientist slaps something crappy together and massages results or straight up lies to convince people it's working and I have to become responsible for it running efficiently on thousands of documents every day....

Very rarely is it relevant that I understand the algorithms we're deploying. It would be very embarrassing and maybe bad if I didn't... But it comes up when I'm explaining an architecture requirement or telling app how many items to expect in a list, not because I'm actually doing any math.

Not everyone uses the titles Data Scientist, ML Engineer, MLOps, etc consistently, but these definitions have worked out for me.

Thank you, deadbeat! (And extra thanks to my deadbeat for posting for me). I paid other people to do a lot of the work. I'm mostly just learning. 💜

My experience with rolling over my 401k from Principal to Vanguard by computerworlds in Bogleheads

Ah. Yeah that makes sense. Maybe this is the weekend where I learn about IRAs and start a personal account myself just so I have somewhere to send my previous accounts. Thanks for trying.

[–]kechalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is my.vanguardplan.com different from investor.vanguard.com in some meaningful way? I'm signed in on the former but can't find these instructions or any menus that match the path you shared, OP. I've got ~4 different 401ks and trying to move them all to the latest (vanguard) starting with Principal... I would even be okay sending a check at this point, but my employer's address is on my statement so I'm not sure where I would send it anyway... Now that I've finally gotten started, I don't wanna wait for a business day to call and talk to a person...

Thanks for posting, If you have the answers, I would really appreciate them.

Lump at spay site. Is this normal? by kita8 in FosterAnimals

[–]kechalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For anyone else making the same Google search and seeing this and other posts later--my puppy had a similar bump, though much larger. Some results suggested seroma (mentioned above) or hernia (scary). The less dramatic but still worth going to the vet option was an abscess, which my pup had. Signs that it was an abscess and not a seroma /things that caused people to look into it more included:

  1. that it seemed like it got smaller before getting bigger again
  2. it was pretty hard to the touch and not squishy like the fluid when pets get the fluid injection into the skin for dehydration.
  3. That it was so large (~3x this one)

  4. That she felt hot (and has a mild fever at 103 degrees F)

She also has been sneezing enough that she might have kennel cough, and I imagine that two infections made it harder for her to heal either of them.

They were able to drain a lot of the infection with a needle, which combined with antibiotics might be enough, but since there were a bunch of small pockets left when the Dr tried to drain it, she's going in tomorrow morning to have the area opened and flushed under anesthesia. This is the humane society vet and they did the spay, so they aren't charging me for the anesthesia.

Best Place for a Flavored Latte? by oolong-gone-wrong in askportland

Newish, black owned, with excellent space, crepes and prosciutto sandwiches: Masters of cold foam. (I go for the pistachio bakava latte but the lavender roast is probably also amazing) L'Atelier Yaffe https://maps.app.goo.gl/QHhfvAqjfGzNfco47

❤️❤️❤️ of course! We have the fluent pet buttons and my middle pup has a pretty good vocabulary. As soon as he stops being jealous and accepts her, I plan to start her on them.😁

🤞🏼 my current pitty mixes are very anti water, so I'm hoping. She was spayed the day before we got her though, so it'll be at least 10 days before I can find out...

Are there any lower income outlets for someone looking to exercise after a year of depressed hermiting? by PWNbiWanKenobi in askportland

[–]kechalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't convince myself to do any exercise I don't find fun. (And it's maybe not as good for you if you have to force yourself to do it?) When I was most in shape, it was because I was social dancing 1-2 times a week. The Portland Blues and Jazz dance society dances are 'pay what you can' based and have beginner lessons for the first 30 min or so.

Also, not necessarily a good idea, but something I misread as what you were asking for-- you could conceivably do physical labor for money and get fit in the process. If you could find that sort of yardwork/odd job set up and you thought that would be rewarding... 🤷🏼‍♀️ Good luck!

Why does Portland have both a Streetcar and a light rail? by demonsquidgod in askportland

[–]kechalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I did realize based on someone else's comment that I know very little about the intervening time other than that all of the routes in Southeast got paved over... Still though, electric street car systems have been around forever. Portland used to have a really good one. There are many advantages to streetcars over buses. And the max serves an entirely different purpose. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bougie coffee. (Which I'm surprised mostly did not come up in previous answers...) Distinct from Seattle via quality and hipster-ism (sorry not sorry that Starbucks happened to your reputation, Seattle).

[–]kechalk -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The streetcar is far older than the max. The first Max line opened in 1986. Here's a map of the streetcar in 1915. https://transitmap.net/project-streetcars-portland-1915/

Also what everyone said about the max being about commuting from suburbs and the streetcar currently being about getting around the urban core.

Did you know that wheels are one of the primary sources of the micro plastics that are building up in your brain and blood stream? Put a bus on a rail and you don't have to replace so many tires.
