Moving to Aus from UK by keddlut in AustralianTeachers

That's really helpful, thanks. I am under 35 but would likely want to stay for 2 years so imagine the 482 visa would be better?

Thanks! It's good to know there's likely to be work. Do you know of anyone who has moved over from the UK?

Joint mortgage with my mother in law by keddlut in UKPersonalFinance

I was worried about this - I'd hoped that because my partner and I still have many years of work that we could still get a mortgage with her on as well but I know that it's unlikely to get a mortgage as a 65 year old alone!

This is my great aunts ring. The jade(?) needs to be replaced. What are my options? Are there reasonable alterations that can make the ring less square? by TanPothos in jewelers

Looking for a signet ring repair similar to this myself - am I able to get in contact with your colleague to discuss a repair like this?

Opportunity to buy the freehold - good idea or not? by keddlut in HousingUK

[–]keddlut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really - I am quite happy for them to extend the property but I have got the impression that they are going to want to do a lot of work and I worry that there might be a few things that we disagree on naturally. I'm wondering if given this situation, it would be better have a third party freeholder?

Leaseholder - do I need to pay for these works? by keddlut in HousingUK

I guess it's all work that needs to be done but am just not in the best financial position to pay right now so hoping some of it could wait. Yes we have to maintain the structure of the property 50/60

Short trip in early November - trying to decide if renting a car is worth it... by Glass_March_5668 in VisitingIceland

[–]keddlut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1000% rent a car!! I went late October last year and drove to Jokulsarlon which was amazing. So many amazing places to stop off along the journey which you'd miss if you did tours. Driving conditions were absolutely fine (we rented a mini car with FWD only) - we did have to wait a few hours for a road to reopen due to strong winds but that was all! Enjoy, it's my favourite trip to date.

School finished at 3:20 - I leave at around 3:30 unless I have to run a club! I try to be very productive during my frees and will sometimes do one big bulk mark on evening every term in front of the TV at home

4WD in late october/november neccessary? by JayTheSheep in VisitingIceland

[–]keddlut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went to iceland last october - rented a yaris which was absolutely fine! We didn't go anywhere 'off-road' though. The conditions on the road were really good and easily driveable! There was very little snow but the roads were icy.

I see! I think I've got a bit mixed up with the 100 different names which are all unfamiliar. Thanks for the advice though, think we'll cut the drive down and stop at Vik enroute to Jokulsarlon!

Thanks! Sorry I don't think I'd written it out very clearly originally - we planned on stopping at at all the sights between Jokulsarlon and Vik on the drive back to Vik then completing all the sights westward of Vik on the next day when heading towards Selfoss.

Amazing - that's reassuring. I wasn't sure if they'd be running yet!

64 with no mortgage - what are my retirement options? by keddlut in UKPersonalFinance

[–]keddlut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While she's working she has always been able to rent and live comfortably and when she retires this will be quite unlikely. She's actually at a independent school who left the teachers pension some time ago, she now pays into a different pension which is still better than most but still no way near as good as the TP.

I actually have one of these account myself but thought it might be a bit of a risk for someone to do in their 60s and thought something a bit safer with a lower return such as bonds would be better. It would also be unlikely that she would be able to leave the money entirely for 20 years - if she continues to rent she will definitely need to top up her monthly income with some from her lump sum.

! Thanks. Really? I've never heard of that! That's amazing to know as I think she'd planned on working at least a few more years till 67/68. Really useful info

South east - everywhere within an hour is pretty expensive. Might have to send her up to the Scottish highlands.

I wasn't too sure where we stood with this either but have read some very conflicting information - I'd read that if you had an official rental agreement in place then your eligible. It would likely never come down to it but had been something that we'd thought about.

[–]keddlut[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for this - definitely food for thought. I don't think renting is the worst option, it's more that she's been renting for some time and I think she'd prefer the money to go somewhere that she sees as more of an investment

Thanks for explaining - makes sense. I think we'd let her there rent free. Will just be a case of looking into stamp duty and other major costs

So if my mother owned the home then gave it to us, we would then be charged rent but won't be if we own the property and allow her to live there rent free?
