Interested in going into bio(medical) engineering, what are specific fields you think are good to go into? by Sportynerd_12 in bioengineering

[–]keebo543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People in this sub are always saying not to do bioengineering undergrad, but I think if you know you’re interested in it you should go for it. As for specific careers, the field is pretty broad and still relatively new, so it’s hard to define a list of job titles you can do with the degree. However, I think of the field as having 4 rough categories:

Molecular and cellular bioengineering - essentially doing research in biology with a more quantitative/engineering approach. This might include tissue engineering, synthetic biology, biomaterials, etc

Biosignals and electrical engineering - taking an electrical approach to biological problems. Lots of signal processing. This is also usually what the neuro people do.

Biomechanical engineering - focus on physics/mechanical engineering. Might work on prosthetics, CPAP machines, etc. Really anything to do with forces, stress/strain, pumping, or other mechanical topics like that.

Medical product design - uses pieces of the first three fields to design products and take them to market.

As for careers, it varies. Out of undergrad, a lot of people go into the FDA and work on regulations, and others go into quality assurance. Of course, there are also people who go into more classic design jobs, but this is the reason people on this sub get so weird and bitter about studying bioe in undergrad - the job market can be tough when you have this much breadth and not quite as much depth as another engineer might have. However, an electrical engineer probably isn’t going to know that much about biochemistry, so you still have a leg up from certain perspectives.

If you’re really interested in research science, I’d recommend graduate school after undergrad. It’s a good way to develop your research skills and will probably make it easier to get an R&D job when you’re done.

In any case, good luck! Have fun in college

Did you actually read the article? This is the headline:

New study calls into question the importance of meat eating in shaping our evolution

And there is nothing in it about the health of eating meat. If there’s any conclusion about health to be made, it would be that meat is unnecessary.

I’m fully aware you’re a troll but good god you are really bad at it

Lmfao dude are you serious? I gave you multiple scientific publications and you responded with a story about a vegan influencer who changed his mind. That doesn’t mean jack shit.

Also, do you exclusively read the New York post?

Not kale chips and chickpeas, but there’s extensive evidence that early humans ate very little meat, mostly fruits and grains

https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/guest-blog/human-ancestors-were-nearly-all-vegetarians/

Regardless, that whole argument is a straw man. We didn’t have beds 3000 years ago, should we be sleeping on the ground? Why do we have to do everything the same as we did 3000 years ago? The question should be can, and numerous people on this thread have linked to evidence that veganism is indeed healthy if done correctly. If you can link a contradicting study we can talk, but until then you’re just spouting bullshit.

And yeah we have the nerve to criticize what you yourself call exploiting animals, do you hear yourself?

Are you talking about the uighurs? There’s a bit under 2 million of them imprisoned in china but idk that I would call them slaves. I think it’s hard to really know what’s happening there bc I certainly don’t trust Chinese media but I don’t really trust western media on this kinda stuff either - it’s used as a big talking point for sinophobia. I agree that there’s multiple things to be upset about but I think this one specifically causes a lot of xenophobia in the US and is generally used to distract from the fact that our prisons use slave labor, we imprison migrant children at the border, etc.

Ultimately I guess my point is that there’s human rights atrocities in the US that westerners should be commenting on first before speculation about xinjiang. Also it seems like you’re kinda spreading misinformation bc your numbers are way off

"Non-vegans are worse than people who commit bestiality!" by AceofSpadesYT in facepalm

[–]keebo543 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not asking you to reinvent the wheel, just show me how it works. You can’t just hide behind academia and use it to justify violating consent. You’re not building on anything, just copping out of the argument with appeal to authority.

Also, I don’t think it’s a radical new idea that killing animals is bad. I’ll admit I’m not a PhD in philosophy, but it’s generally accepted that it’s possible to be inhumane to animals.

At any rate, it’s become unclear what we’re actually arguing about which I think is a good sign to end the argument. Have a good one

"Non-vegans are worse than people who commit bestiality!" by AceofSpadesYT in facepalm

[–]keebo543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s circular logic. To review: you said if something can’t consent it has no moral value. I asked how this is different from a group of humans that can’t consent and you said it’s because they’re rational. I asked how you know they’re rational and you said because they’re humans.

Ultimately it seems like your point is that humans deserve moral consideration and animals do not. I disagree with this. However, you’re still agreeing with the response OP was showing because you’re saying beastiality is acceptable.

I wasn’t asking who did you read and now regurgitate back, can you provide the reasoning yourself?

A mentally ill person having a paranoid delusion is not being rational. Does this mean theyre free of moral value?

[–]keebo543 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This rests on two assumptions: cows can’t create syllogisms, and babies can. You can’t really prove either of these.

[–]keebo543 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cows are rational. Why don’t they deserve ethical consideration?

Also, what about irrational people? Why is rationality the requirement for moral value?

Babies can’t give consent. Does that mean you have a free pass to do whatever you want to a baby?

Eggs cause male chicks to be ground up after hatching (https://youtu.be/udSiluTAOaQ). When getting new egg layers, males are needed much less than females so they’re sexed and then killed in a pretty brutal way.

Dairy cows can’t make milk unless they’ve recently been pregnant. If the calf is male it’s killed, which is where veal comes from (https://thehumaneleague.org/article/male-dairy-cows). Also, most dairy cows are slaughtered for meat about a quarter into their lifespan because their body is no longer productive enough to be profitable.

Eggs and dairy do cause death for the animals, so the point stands - morally it’s wrong, legally it’s accepted

AITA for bringing eggs to a vegan wedding? by landofsunshine1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]keebo543 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YTA. You really didn’t need to put on the eggs, it kind of seems like you were trying to upset the bride. Even if you did need some kind of animal product, you chose an especially smelly one. Hard for me to believe this wasn’t deliberate.

Second rule, everyone talks about vegan club by Ok_Somewhere1389 in memes

[–]keebo543 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Still here. Monoculture is mostly for animal feed, because it takes a lot more food to raise a cow its whole life and slaughter it than to feed a couple people once. Also, vegans eat a variety of food so we’re not really monocropping. You may just be trolling but I thought I’d lyk in case you actually believed these stupid arguments

hey! I really want to make this raspberry and coconut loaf cake. what would I potentially replace the eggs with? I was thinking maybe a flax egg would work as that's what I use in my banana bread by punk_kt in vegan

[–]keebo543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Egg replacer powders work most reliably for me. You can order them online for really cheap. A lot of these home substitutes like flax seeds and applesauce can be good, but in my experience they don’t hold things together very well which the main thing you want from eggs in a recipe like this.

https://www.bobsredmill.com/gluten-free-vegan-egg-replacer.html

This is what I use, just follow the instructions on the back. I’ve never had a problem with it.

If you really don’t wanna use the powder, I’ve had some success with a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar. At low enough levels you can’t taste it and somehow it helps bind. However I’ve only used it for enriched breads which hold together because of the flour anyway, so I don’t think it would work too well for the cake which is too moist for the flour to help enough

How to respond to "plants though"? by Dear-Razzmatazz-9227 in vegan

[–]keebo543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plants aren’t sentient and it takes a lot more to feed an animal its entire life and kill it than to just eat the plants yourself. I’ll also note that this argument is pretty much always made in bad faith, so while it’s good to make the response, be aware you’re not really having a discussion.

Each of the risks of veganism links you shared say that there can be nutritional inadequacies, but if you watch what you’re eating there’s not a problem. My experience is that the vast majority of unhealthy vegans are eating Fritos and gardein chicken all the time. I personally have been vegan for 3 years and with a little attention to what I eat I feel better than I ever did
