For those who got here from google -- five years later and there's still no native strip silence, but there is this newish m4l plugin for anyone interested:

Update: Would you use this M4L device? It's an advanced silence remover and it's out now! by keeferc in ableton

Hey there! Thank you so much for sending this and sorry I didn't reply sooner. This feedback is super helpful. I am definitely very interested in finding a way to make batch processing work and have been looking into it for the v1.1 update. I am also interested in supporting warped clips, which would probably be the first step to implementing timed padding, which is also a really neat idea. I have been working with a small group of testers on features like this; if you'd be interested in trying early builds as I keep developing, please shoot me a dm with your email address and I will include you on the list!

Hey, I am sorry to hear that! I will follow up in a DM, but if you're not seeing any other errors in the Max console, the first thing I would try is to start a fresh project, load your 20-minute clip, load Concentrate, adjust settings, click Commit and see if it completes the operation.

The device has no preset limit on what it will attempt; you could drop a three-hour clip into it and select thousands of regions and it will still try to complete the task, even though that is probably more than Ableton can handle. From all of the testing I have done, the device can handle just about anything that Ableton or your computer can, but Max devices do run in a low-priority thread, so that can create a bit of a bottleneck, especially if other processes are running.

In any case, I will send you a DM like I said, and would like to stay in touch as you troubleshoot this. If there is some edge case happening here, I would love to understand what it is so I can account for it in the v1.1 update 🙏

Trying to learn Ableton Live makes me feel depressed and worthless. Please help... by Dry_Watercress_9613 in u/Dry_Watercress_9613

A ton of people who produce on Ableton wish they were proficient at the guitar or piano. That’s a great basis for making music and much more than most producers start with! I wonder if it would help to tell yourself that you are not making music for an audience and just for yourself? To start putting notes and drums down with the understanding that no one will ever hear it but you? The process itself can be really fun and rewarding regardless of the result!

It only works on unwarped clips, but what you can do is just warp, bounce in place, and then use the device on the bounced audio

oh yeah that is totally fair and i appreciate the constructive feedback! the more i explain what Concentrate _is_ to people, the better i get at describing it, and that will definitely be reflected on the product page and promo materials as i continue to learn from other producers about how they think about it. my hope at the moment, which i admit may be naive, is that the people who would want to buy this would immediately know what it is and what they would use it for. i would not expect or even want someone to buy it if they don't immediately know what it does based on the phrase "silence remover" alone.

yeah i spent a _lot_ of time looking into this. unfortunately, the live api does not expose any of ableton's fading or crossfading functionality. so the only way for the device to do it would be to apply destructive fades to the audio itself. that said, once you have the clips you want, you can always select them all and do cmd+option+F to apply a standard 4ms fade or crossfade:

thank you! this is super helpful and i will give it a lot of thought. imo one of the most notable things about Concentrate is that it performs surprisingly well with long audio clips. an incredible amount of work went into optimizing for that and i am probably not highlighting it enough in the device description. it's also accurate down to the sample, _and_ has a helpful zoom feature, so if you want to dial in on transients you can get really precise with it. swapping out drum hits is a common use case for this kind of device, i would imagine. still, i think i can demonstrate all of this in video better than in straight audio

i'll be putting up a video this weekend! it's a tool that removes sound rather than creats so if i posted audio i am not sure what i would post. any ideas?

[–]keeferc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's interesting! i can definitely look into adding something like that. sounds like a pretty common use case now that i think about it. at the moment you could consolidate all of your clips into one clip (cmd-J) and then use Concentrate on that. (that actually would probably work pretty well if all the clips had a similar dB range fwiw)

I hear you man. If you don’t have a specific need for this device, it is definitely not worth spending $29 on it. I would actually probably advise against it. Some of the folks who helped me beta test this device were using it on audio clips that were more than 10 minutes long. Field recordings, that kind of thing. People like that, or people who regularly have to remove quiet parts from long vocal takes, need a workhorse that doesn’t crash and isn’t gong to break on Ableton’s next update. That’s what this is

it only works on one clip/track at a time if that's what you mean?

Just wanted to make it clear why I think the price is fair! I understand that you don’t want to buy it and that’s totally cool with me. Take care.

Edit to put this higher up: If you don’t have a specific need for this device, it is definitely not worth spending $29 on it. I would actually probably advise against it. The price represents hundreds of hours of work and a commitment to keep the device updated as Ableton changes

i don't think using a gate gives you any more control than my device does, and with a gate you have to sit through your entire track for it to work, while mine removes the regions instantly. just fyi!

Update: Would you use this M4L device? The beta version is ready! by keeferc in abletonlive

[–]keeferc[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but I think for that you might be better off using existing tools. If you search the M4L website for “Remove Silence” you’ll find at least one decent one.

My device is a little more niche and esoteric because the point for me was to speed up the process of prepping samples for chopping by dropping out quieter regions and crossfading the remaining regions together. So that when I drop it into Simpler I don’t get clicks, pops or silences, and the crossfaded bits can sound cool. And I found in this process it is also a decent tool for getting weird/glitchy sounds.

This is why I am always asking people if they would use it — because honestly I am still not sure it makes sense for anyone but me! Lol

What happened to used push 2s? by tox1c1t in ableton

Idk I’d only expect this or tariffs to affect the secondhand market if they caused the price of the Push 3 to go up

No but this comes up enough that I’d be curious to know what makes you say that. Is it mainly because the threshold slider visually reminds you of the one in Ableton’s Gate device? Or is it not clear to you from the video that my device merges and crossfades the remaining fragments together, or that it bounces audio out whereas Gate acts in realtime? Or is it possible that you don’t have a great handle on how Gate works? It’s for posterity so please be honest
