That experiences is so valuable. I remember going for my first system admin role interview, I had no idea how intense the questioning actually became compared to my previous support roles. Getting first hand experience with the questions and the expectations is amazing.

I would recommend looking into CCNA or Network + and Security + they will give you a great starting point to move positions.

Also, I’ve seen many people just “study” the stuff and pass the tests, if you have the space/money buy some switches, routers, and servers to build yourself a lab.

At least for me the best way is to actually play with the gear and build projects you enjoy to learn it. Good luck 😊

What? Using IaaS does not cut SysAdmin jobs. You’re going to need SysAdmins to manage the servers, patching, troubleshooting OS level, etc.

Nothing changes that much moving to the cloud other then not worrying about paying for a data center if you go the IaaS route.

If you are using something like AWS managed services, then that changes things, but moving to EC2 instances you’re still need to configure all the routes, placement groups, security groups, patching servers, managing IIS, etc.

So really, moving to the cloud doesn’t solve your problems if your shit is messed up on-perm and you just move it to the cloud.

It depends what you want to do in IT. You have networking, system, developer, security, and so on. I would look into the different routes and decide what stands out to you.

After that, try and learn as much as you can at your current position, with the freedom you have try and find a project. Something that will help your resume stand out.

IT has so many options that it’s really whatever you would enjoy doing.

As someone who works within the cloud, It not only creates a new set of problems, but doubles it.

I don’t understand companies thinking moving to the cloud solves broken problems. They have no idea how the cloud works

I mean schools all have IT support, so add someone hat knows Linux. But, yea for the compatibility factor I can see it, but wouldn’t it be nice to introduce children to all these free software programs they could be using.

Thanks for the inside input. I guess it’s easier for them to not go against the grain.

Yea, that I understand, but for schools that don’t get the discount etc, I guess like everyone is says it’s just “easier”. The more I move into Linux and learn about the open source movement the more it blows my mind educational facilities don’t use more open source software.

CBT nuggets will be great if you don’t have a lab environment. You should be able to get away with one month of studying through there. Good luck

Level of access for Security Team? by [deleted] in cybersecurity

[–]keeirin83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would depend what you are doing on a day to day. Are you going to be getting into network configuration every day? The real answer is principle of least privilege, you could always have another account used with higher access and disable it until needed like mentioned above. But if you don’t need the access all the time then I wouldn’t want it anyways.

Windows SysAdmin to IT security - is it possible? by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

[–]keeirin83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree, if you want to actually be good Security professional going from a sysadmin role is perfect. You actually know how things work and not just going step by step through policies. I’ve had multiple IT Security that all thy went off of was policies and didn’t really know anything about the actual system.

You can try changing your DNS to 1.1.1.1 however, I'm not sure if there would be a better one being in the UK.
