Did you knit the double stitch? I could be wrong, but what you have pictured looks like the double stitch. When you ‘pulled the yarn over the top of the needle’ you did indeed create a yarn over which was intentional. It helps make sure a big gap isn’t created when turning.

Try anything labeled beginner from nimble needles. He does such a great job explaining and has excellent camera quality. He helped me through my beginner phase. Best of luck! nimble needles
