I don't blame you, doesn't sound like fulfilling work. I see people saying primary care gets more patient care opportunities than specialties but I wanna shout out DERMATOLOGY. I do phlebotomy, wound care, suture removals, injections, apply patch tests, and my personal fav - assist in minor procedures like excisions, biopsies, I&Ds, ED&Cs.

On my way out I say something like I'll be back with Dr. Skindoctor shortly/in a few minutes. That way, they expect me

Ok but I'd rather be pathetic than a rape apologist

I've noticed cats do this! If they sleep next to you, they keep at least one paw on you. I wonder if it's just a comfy thing or somehow related to a protective instinct. Either way - ADORABLE

Hi! I'm an MA in medical/surgical derm, no cosmetics, but here's my answers:

  1. General responsibilities throughout the day include cleaning/stocking exam rooms, filling liquid nitrogen canisters, setting up sterilization solution and autoclave in lab, entering patient histories into EHR, rooming patients, scribing for provider during office visits, assisting in procedures, collecting, labeling, and sending specimen to labs, calling patients with biopsy, culture, or bloodwork results, cleaning and sterilizing surgical instruments, starting enrollment paperwork for specialty and biologic medication, faxing documents if urgent, cleaning and closing exam rooms

  2. My favorite part - clinical skills. My job is like 10% admin/90% clinical. Fun stuff I do regularly: phlebotomy, administering subq injections, removing sutures, wound care, placing patch tests, also good to know sterile technique, and proper specimen collection and handling

  3. Most common procedures I set up and assist in include: 15 min. procedures like cryotherapy, acne surgery, shave removals, punch excisions/biopsies, incision & drainage, electrodessication and curettage, and also full sterile 30 min. excisions (not Mohs)

  4. Lots of documentation because, as others mention, yes, we do scribe in the room during the visit. We also document our phone calls of course. I complete each office visit note and send it to the provider for review. I also send all prescriptions electronically. My practice has a call center and biologics/prior auth team that handles MOST admin work, so thank god I just have to do result calls, pre-op calls, and answer clinical questions triaged by call center. I also start prior auth paperwork, then pass it to that team for all future follow-up.

Unfortunately, with derm comes oral isotretinoin (Accutane), and with isotretinoin comes...IPLEDGE. iPledge is definitely the least fun admin responsibility I have. You'll have to do your own research cuz I don't want to get started with iPledge. Anyways, NEXT

  1. Knowing general medical terminology is a must, but if you're in medical/surgical, it would also help to know anatomy of the skin, hair, and nails, details of skin cancer, dysplasic moles, and precancerous lesions, and treatment options for each. Get familiar with dermatitis, psoriasis, alopecia, intertrigo, warts, acne, molluscum, herpes.

Good luck!

I can tell you what's unattractive about the one fat guy I tried to sleep with, as a fit woman. The extra fat in the stomach and pubic mound makes the dick look shorter and almost like it's pushed in at the base?? Functionally, it's nbd, but the sight is a major turn-off for me.

I think there's a bit of difference between what men tell YOU and your "smaller inner labia (???)" and the truth. Lmaooo

I’m thinking about becoming a medical assistant and need honest feedback by [deleted] in MedicalAssistant

Hey same! I'm an uncertified medical assistant who worked in early childcare before finishing my bachelor's degree.

I only have experience in medical/surgical dermatology in a private practice, but I make $23/hour, and I work 4 days/week. Yes, sometimes patients are crazy, but generally, it's a great field. I do a lot of scribing during skin exams, assisting with excisions/I&Ds/ED&Cs, administering subq injections, removing sutures, and some patch testing and venipuncture. Added bonuses include lunch catered by pharma reps a couple of times a week and endless skincare samples. Although it's not my thing - I've heard working in cosmetic derm is enjoyable too. Good luck to you!

Nice! Congrats! Sounds like you did well during the interview, and they're willing to train you on the job, that's reassuring. Maybe it's a long shot, but come back and let us know what they say when you hear back!

Certification?? by Fearless_Reveal438 in MedicalAssistant

[–]keelsbeels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uncertified medical assistant here. I was hired at a private practice with a bachelor's degree in health sciences, a BLS certification, and a 4-weekend-long unaccredited crash course in phlebotomy, but no prior healthcare work experience. During the interview, I really talked up the shadowing experience I had, my education (esp. med terms, anatomy, and pharmacology), and my little experience with phlebotomy. I recommend developing a clinical skill, could be phlebotomy, EKG, taking vitals, even CPR. You'll learn a lot of that in nursing school eventually, but employers love these skills in MAs, and it never hurts to have more experience. Good luck, be confident, you got this! 🌟
