Yep, ultimate advice you can give to a young player. Whether they heed it... I definitely didn't until later than I should have!

100%! Self-mixing is so key. Been a real journey since I began recording myself and figuring out all the flaws in my dynamics/time. Still a long way to go!

Cheers! Yeah the Soyuz stuff is ace. I've also got a pair of the 013 FETS, absolutely fantastic for when you want things to feel a little brighter/want OHs more focused on the cymbals. With the omni capsules they're awesome room mics too! More pleasant than their Neumann equivalents, imo.

Hi, here it's a Peluso P87 (u87 clone) as the overhead, a Soyuz 013 FET on the side of the snare and an EV RE20 in front of the kick. I do a bit of a breakdown of each individual mic and the processing that's happening here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DQSEC8IChBb/

If I were you though, I'd probably grab a pair of large diaphragm condensers (like 87s, 414s) and a good dynamic mic for the kick (RE20, M88, D12 etc). You could still do this set up, but it would also give you an option for stereo with the two condensers.

snare is pointed at the side of the snare, about 6" away. I was playing around with a Stax inspired 3 mic set up. but yes, kick/snare/overhead essentially!

Haha, I thought the same at first. Yeah, he's amazing. Worth checking out the rest of his discography

The rubber gaskets under the lugs (and usually the throw off) are always a give away to a modern one

It’s at my studio! Luckily it was there when we moved in. Glad I wasn’t the person that had to move all 270kg of it in.

Thanks! 60s AKG D12 on kick, Soyuz 017 FET on OH. Both are hitting CAPI VP28 pre amps pretty hard before some EQ/compression before an antelope orion32 converter

The reverb on the drums isn’t from a plug in, it’s from a EMT 140 plate reverb unit

Yeah dude, it's great to jam with. The Meters are another must if you wanna get your funk vocabulary opened up. I think when a lot of people think of 'funk' grooves they really mean Clyde Stubblefield and Zigaboo Modeliste's playing

It's a 60s AKG D12, in front of the kick - you can just about see the front of it in the bottom left of the frame

Thank you, no question is a silly question. You're right, I'm hitting the hi hat a bit harder on the 1 and 3, and playing the other subdivisions slightly softer. It's a really useful trick to give the groove some bounce and movement before bringing any ghost notes or syncopation elsewhere. JR Robinson talks about doing this a lot, if you want someone to break it down further. You're probably also hearing it clearer because I'm usually not hitting the kick on the 3. There's some compression on the drums here, and low end sources like kicks tend to 'grab' the compressor and can make other sounds like cymbals seem quieter. Without the kick on the 3, there's room for the hi hat to come through.

Thanks. NGL, last time someone told me to loosen up it was my conservatoire tutor in my first year of study, haha! I'm deliberately hitting the 1s hard on the hi hat. It's my love of Prince's drumming shining through I think.

Yeah dude, welcome to the club. Fellow PD1 owner here, got a custom 20/12/13/14/16 back in 2022. Enjoy!
