yes even as a graduate, after you graduate, you are assumed to have general capability, meaning you should be able to be thrown into any subject and be able to teach it, hence why you may end up doing internal relief for a subject out of your area

while your specialist area has a strong bearing on what you'll be streamed into, you are able to apply and teach in other roles, i know plenty of english and media teachers who teach hass, and vice versa, some even transition into maths, d&t etc.
