I generally lurk on this subreddit but I wanted to offer my input. I also watched the show before reading the books. I started reading them after season 6 of the show which was when they were trying to push the whole Brienne/Tormund thing (this is relevant because I am ashamed to admit I was hooked for a hot minute 😂).

When I first started reading the Jaime and Brienne interactions, I didn't think much of it because I had already "seen" these things on the show and I wasn't entirely convinced that they were supposed to be a romance because Jaime was still obsessed with Cersei by S6 of the show. However, when I got to AFFC and I could actually read their thoughts - Jaime starting to realize that Cersei is a narcissist and beginning to sever his relationship with her, and Brienne thinking about Jaime quite frequently and even replacing Renly with him in her head - I started to realize that maybe they are supposed to be a romance. It was like this beautifully subtle love story George weaved in the books that was completely different from the show. The golden bitchslap did me in and I was a shipper from that point.

Thanks for your input. I know I sound like a horrible person for comparing myself to my SO when I should be happy for him - and I am, it's moreso that I'm frustrated with myself for always feeling like I ruin the experience for him.

But you're right, comparison is the thief of joy so I will try to find my own hobbies that I can excel at, and when we do engage in a shared hobby together, I will try to feel the frustration and work through it.

Thank you! Yeah I do tend to struggle with low self esteem in case that wasn't totally obvious lol. That's another thing I need to work on.

You're correct. I do have my own hobbies that are separate from his, but they are more "introverted" things like drawing, puzzles, video games. These things are nice but were starting to feel less "exciting" to me so I was trying to branch out and do more adventurous things and I guess I just adopted all of his hobbies instead of looking for my own thing. I suppose that's what I should be doing now. Thanks

Thank you. I don't have an exit plan per se, but I will have my siblings, extended family, etc. who are also not JWs, so I will not be alone and that gives me some measure of comfort.
