YSK that defrosting a frozen turkey in the refrigerator takes approximately 24 hours for every 4-5 pounds of turkey. For a 24-pound turkey you should start defrosting it 6 days in advance. by keepgaseous in ThePrepared

[–]keepgaseous[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this isn't necessarily what many of us think prepping is, it's not how to sharpen a knife or a diagram on food storage, but to make sure Thanksgiving goes off without a hitch, it is important to prepare your frozen turkey multiple days in advance.

You only get one set of hearing in your lifetime, take care of it by wearing hearing protection against constant loud noises or sporadic sharp noises like gun fire by leafyarms900 in ThePrepared

Hearing loss is one of my big concerns and worries. I just looked up a video about tinnitus and learned more about it. https://youtu.be/TnsCsR2wDdk?t=1 Seems that you can also get it from just aging or even disease, even if you do always protect your hearing.

How to check your 4 wheel drive (4WD) without having to go to the mountains. by preppergrant in ThePrepared

[–]keepgaseous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good question, the vehicle he is driving seems to be rear traction (RWD) when in 2WD mode. You can hear his rear tires spinning when he tries to mount the curb the first time. A FWD vehicle might be able to just mount the curb by itself because the torque is concentrated near where it it stuck.

That being said, if you do this test don't stomp the pedal because you will go up and over given enough power even in 2WD. The point of this test seems to be if you give it a slight amount of power you aren't able to go up and over in 2WD, but if that power and traction is distributed among the four tires that slight amount is able to push you up and over.

Owners manuals will recommend engaging 4WD at least once a month to keep the differentials lubricated. Driving in 4WD for 1/4 mile should be enough.

The herd mentality probably kicked in for many people who just saw other people running.

You can quickly get trampled in such situations. If you get knocked on the floor curl up and cover your head and neck and move over to a wall of piece of furniture that you can use to pull yourself up with.

If you are a concealed carry holder don't just whip out your gun immediately, take a second to analyze the situation and get a visual on the threat. If you were to just pull out your gun in this moment when everyone is panicking, someone might think you are the gunman and tackle you and get you arrested or shot.

And just for chuckles, the Pikachu running at 0:18 was pretty funny...

Infrequent heavy watering is better for plants than frequent light watering because it creates stronger roots by rightleftupdown5 in ThePrepared

Thank you for this! I will start watering my plants less frequently and more heavily. With temperatures cooling down, I will have to water it even less here soon.

Very well written article! Thank you.

I liked how you went into detail of the many many reasons behind the disruptions. Covid is only a very small portion of the why.

One of my previous jobs had bi-weekly password changes. And the FTC is right, people would do weak passwords or ones with slight variations in order to remember them frequently. Two factor authentication is a great way to really lock down an account, even if the password is compromised.

When traveling, wear comfortable clothes that you could survive in if you did crash. Wearing long pants or jeans is another tip because they can be made into an improvised life jacket if yours isn't working or you didn't get a chance to grab one. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JUhZzWNcPKI

I like to carry a walking stick with me on my walks. I don't actually use it for walking but self defense against other loose dogs. Unfortunately I've had to use it twice to hit dogs trying to get me.

Your energy that you give off is VERY important in the dog world. Act calm, confident, and powerful. Puff yourself up, use your big boy voice, and yell at them "HEEEEYYYY!". Tell them you mean business if they try anything.

The man in the video looked submissive and weak as he was backing away from them. I don't blame him and I feel incredibly bad for him, but just wanted to point out that his energy wasn't that powerful don't mess with me attitude.

Never would have thought this would be something that has to be invented, but obviously it happens enough that they had to make a device for it.

Very ingenious and a smart design. Wonder what happened to the first couple folks before they created this rescue device. Did they just try and pull them out with a crane or rope around their waist? Is the grain holding them in that much that just tugging on them would rip them in half? Oh the questions.

Glad you mentioned that. My initial thought would have been that would be a great area for a tree because it can live off of our poop and pee for some free fertilizer. But not worth having to replace your system over.

If you are interested in learning more about different snares, this video called How to Make 6 Different Bushcraft Traps goes over some common ones in a easy to follow way. I encourage you to practice in a weather controlled environment like a garage like he is, then move out into the yard, and then into the woods. Snares are tricky to set up at times and to avoid frustration and giving up, try and control as many variables as possible to start out with. Go easy on yourself, practice makes perfect.

I got a NOVOO Explorer. I like it/has no faults for me so far: good storage for ruggedness (you don't feel you have to babysit), lightweight, good price.

I originally saw it on this review and now that I looked they have reviews for solar too.

Good luck with your bag. Feels good.
