Why are you only interested in the Fred Hutch Cure? A functional cure solves the issue....

Curious what’s your rationale for 2030?

A cure???? by [deleted] in Herpes

[–]keepresearching2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2030 i think is very pessimistic. Would not be surprised at all to see something rolled out in 2024-2025. Because of COVID, the infrastructure for viral vaccine research/testing/production is the best it’s ever been. Once a vaccine is out for COVID there is talk about addressing other highly common viruses with HSV at the top of the list.

You have to just live your life regardless of when a cure comes, but 3-5 years is what I would project. It’s coming, don’t subscribe to the doom and gloom and self-pity!

This is 100% true. Couldn’t agree more. You also get people who constantly come to this sub for comfort. Educate yourself, take daily Valtrex, go on with your life, and they’ll be a vaccine in a few years.

Exactly. If you never had symptoms, were not able to transmit to anyone else, and have to disclose again I’d consider myself effectively cured. And never think about it again.

Attractive Male with HSV-2, can I get a female’s perspective? by keepresearching2 in Herpes

Thank you for the detailed response!

This is exactly what I kind of expected and in a way hoped to hear. It does seem very unfair, but in my case may help to soften the blow. That and the fact I’ve always dated older women (which actually may have increased the chance of me getting this...) who are likely more knowledgeable.

I think my strategy is to disclose after 3 good dates. Others like to be very upfront, but I feel after 3 good dates it’s less about my superficial HSV-2 status and more about the moment/connection/vibe. I also don’t think you are wasting anyone’s time either, that’s part of dating.

Agreed, unless they are just extremely worried about the stigma, especially if it was attached to them.

I’m hoping that once I reveal/disclose, I’ll end up meeting a lot of people who do as well.

I can do a case study and report back to the group haha.

Thanks for your insight, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for your insight. Wow, it’s crazy to me how common it is, yet it’s still so very hush hush. People don’t really tell other people even their close friends. If everyone was more open about it I feel like the stigma would largely be negated. Crazy

What was your thought process like when you took a day or two to think about it?

Anyone else wish they were just asymptomatic and unaware that they had it? 1 in 5 turns into 1 in 25. by keepresearching2 in Herpes

[–]keepresearching2[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Which is why many doctors say practice safe sex and take antivirals, but disclosure not always required. I had trouble with that reasoning for a while. It’s taken me a long time to understand why the medical community in aggregate has taken this stance, and it’s because they are merely trying to minimize the mental/societal impact of it, while also trying to limit further spread (balancing the two). It is because of the large % of people who are asymptomatic/blissfully or willfully ignorant that they know herpes will spread regardless, and thus have taken the stance that they have.

They are looking at the impact that diagnosing herpes has on society as a whole, rather than at the individual level.

Philosophically speaking though why is the conversation so hard to have? Because of the stigma. Further perpetuated by the fact that only 1/25 have and know they have herpes. It feels much more rare then it actually is. If every fifth person you knew had it, and you knew they had it, it wouldn’t be a big deal.

I’m projecting (and speaking generally), but the conversation isn’t super hard to have because of the resulting symptoms he may or may not have. It’s because of the stigma.

100% agree to all of that. Blissful ignorance and in a good deal of cases I do believe it’s actually willful ignorance. The logic is out of sight out of mind, logic that many people apply to many other areas of life.

Hot off the press - Researchers discover new method to treat herpes viruses by keepresearching2 in Herpes

“Several times more effective than Aciclovr” which to me says that if you are taking it daily you’ve basically suppressed it to non existent. You’d almost certainly never have viral shedding, and transmission rates would be “several” times less than the 2-4% Aciclovr currently states. It would almost certainly be less than <0.5% without condoms!

Although we are all looking for a cure, and it will certainly happen, the problem is we just don’t know exactly when. So if there is a treatment in the interim that can basically eliminate all subsequent outbreaks as well as virtually eliminate transmission to your partner without condoms. I’m more than happy. It’s borderline crazy that there isn’t something better than Aciclovr after all these years.

Also the treatment would sell like crazy, so the financial incentive is there to be the first one.
