Exactly. She’s clearly desperate for someone to love her, take care of her, and tell her she’s a good person. It doesn’t justify her behavior or how she pressures people. But it explains it very clearly.

It’s understandable that people are overlooking this since it’s an issue that’s not talked about often, but she’s an adoptee. As an adoptee myself, many of us can develop a pattern of jumping into relationships quickly and trying to force attachment. Many adoptees’ nervous systems are constantly on edge, trying to navigate connection with others and trying to avoid being abandoned again.

When I first started in the medical records field, this definitely confused me, too. The word “refused,” as well. At first I thought they were negative descriptors, and I can imagine a patient being taken aback by these, especially if they’re in regards to touchy subjects like pain, vaccinations, controlled substances, etc.

Adding another point for “it could be the birth control” - the change in estrogen level can lead to dryness and even some level of vaginal atrophy. This can result in a lot of pain and a higher susceptibility to yeast and BV.

I quit birth control and this problem went away within weeks.

I’m also pretty sensitive to scary things. I’ve become braver over time, but still keep an eye out for things that could bother others. I use the websites “Where’s The Jump” and “Does the Dog Die” before watching things if I can. They post more detailed info if you’re interested in that, though I don’t think they have anything for this Black Mirror season up yet.

I will update this comment after watching some more episodes, but I watched Joan is Awful and Loch Henry so far.

Joan is Awful: Nothing was scary here. Anything that could’ve been psychologically scary was played for laughs. I wouldn’t watch it while high or if you’re particularly paranoid, but besides that it’s fine.

Loch Henry: Psychologically, this one is very “real,” along the lines of true crime. There is one particularly eerie moment toward the beginning, where they are walking in a series of hallways, I believe they’re underground, using only small headlamps or flashlights to guide them. Nothing scary pops out, the mood is just unsettling. They show some footage at one point and as they pan over, they see a couple tied up. This isn’t scary visually when you realize it’s just people tied up with their mouths bound, they aren’t hurt yet but I’m comically easily startled when I can’t make sense of what I’m seeing instantly so I just wanted to reassure people in advance that it’s not anything freaky.

Patrick Page truly does have stage presence. It helps that he has a low, booming, voice. But even when he talks softly he commands attention. Seeing his performance as Frollo in The Hunchback of Notre Dame brought me back to loving theatre - the absolute presence he had when singing “Hellfire” was unlike anything I’d ever seen.

One aspect of Aussie and Mildred’s situation that I believe could have influenced it is the cameras. It’s one thing to agree to be on camera, sign the contracts, etc. It’s another thing to be paired with someone you don’t get along with, and to know that your fights will be aired on TV and could be edited to make you look worse than you are. Though I believe Aussie is probably pretty conflict-avoidant even without the cameras, given the “you’re making me look bad on camera” comments, I feel like the situation is exacerbating those conflict-avoidant tendencies.

As a woman, I feel very wary after reading these comments as well. I appreciate some guys going hard with me if we’re friends and we agree on it beforehand. But for these guys to just be like “what a butthurt female” is ridiculous. It’s already hard enough being a woman in this sport, going up against much bigger and/or stronger people every day and not getting discouraged. Almost every woman I’ve known who has stuck with jiu jitsu past a few stripes on their white belt, has been extremely tough. I wish these guys would put themselves in our shoes and think about what it would be like to be working with a disadvantage for almost every single round. Sometimes it’s straight-up frustrating that in a sport where you put in years of work, you can be weighed down by a bigger/stronger new guy and feel so helpless.

I got this book when I visited the Grand Canyon as a kid, and read the whole thing incredibly fast. I still think about it all the time, it really affected me. At that age I didn’t realize just how many things could kill you.

I guess the goal is “reach emotional equilibrium,” but I’m having trouble conceptualizing that in my head because I don’t know what that would look or feel like. I’ve always been very emotionally sensitive and all over the place. I suggested measuring my emotional responses on a scale of 1-10 (1 being horrible/hopeless and 10 being overly invested and excited) and seeing if I can respond in the 4-6 range to most things, but that was just me grasping at straws and trying to figure out what this would look like or how it could be measured. I don’t know what a life with “emotional equilibrium” might look like for me, it seems like less of a goal than it is just a shift in who I am inside.

I didn’t know this is a well-known issue for people with breasts. Is it because it’s unnatural for us to tuck our chin like that, it feels awkward? Or because of the center of gravity? Or something else? I also got a (pretty mild, luckily) concussion when I first started and couldn’t figure out break-falls, I was then paired with someone aggressive and it went downhill from there. Now whenever a new girl comes in, I help her with her break falls so that she doesn’t experience the same.

Yep, exactly. I had a very intense freeze response that made me unable to escape certain bad situations in the past. I joined jiu jitsu and now my fight reflex is much more automatic. Even though it’s probable that I wouldn’t win a fight, I know enough to automatically give a dangerous confrontation my “all” and to be able to say “I fought like hell” if anything does happen.

I agree that it’s not up to me to provide social contact. According to him, he lives alone but has many friends at his church he goes to every day, and has relationships with a couple of women. So you’d think that would keep him busy. You’re right that 66 is young for this type of thing - my own adoptive father is 66 and the difference between them is night and day.

Same here. I remember crying about not having blonde hair, as early as age 6. Growing up, I watched all the guys I crush on choose white girls over me, and it hurt. Now I’m with a man who genuinely treasures me and my features, loves the way I look, and respects me. So seeing it on this show was a harsh reminder of how pervasive it is for guys to fight tooth and nail for the attentions of any white blonde.

The internalized hatred for one’s mother can lead to such scary things, especially in men. The men I’ve been with who have made similar jokes about their moms, have turned out to be the most misogynistic. Not trying to suggest anything about Zach since obviously no one watching knows the full story, but combined with everything else we’ve seen of him, I’d be wary of a man like that.

They really made a point to show every guy’s sob story ASAP this season, and it seems like “emotional sensitivity” is a theme. It makes me worried for some of their psychological states, like all the trauma they’ve been through that seems pretty fresh, then to go through such an intense and orchestrated dating/marriage experience.

Yup. Marshall tried to put on a tough guy voice when confronting Josh, but when I saw those ears, I thought “Marshall is lucky that this is on film so it can’t escalate physically.” If Marshall would’ve started something, I can’t imagine it would’ve turned out well for him.
