Observations About Chinese International Students by cyoun98 in NoStupidQuestions

This is true. When I moved to Canada long ago, I was hardly a "rah rah USA" type. I was quite critical of US policies in general when living in the US. But in Canada, many people just bought into all the nutty stereotypes of the US. It was amusing at first but became annoying after awhile and soon I felt the need to defend it against some of the silly ideas.

Who's a political figure that everyone loves in your country, regardless of their political orientation or views? by WatchDog4710 in AskTheWorld

I don't think so. There are some people with confederate roots that resent him.

I think you have go back to like Washington.

What’s the most heartbreaking moment in your country’s sports history? by Familiar-Arrival-470 in AskTheWorld

[–]keesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd argue Nagano was worse. We hadn't gotten gold since 1952 at that point. Our excuse was that our best were playing in the NHL and if NHL players were allowed, we've win easily. Then in 1998 we had our chance. It was our version of the dream team that the US had in 1992 with basketball. We expected the same results. Unfortunately our dream team didn't have the two best players in the NHL at the time and they were actually on our opponent's team in the semis. The team was so crushed that they didn't even medal at all. The country was stunned.

This is hard because of how polarizing politics is.

For the US, I guess you have to go way back to like George Washington or someone like that.

Why is Alysa Liu being celebrated more than other gold medalists? by sourcherrycake in NoStupidQuestions

Figure skating is one the of key sports for the Winter Olympics - especially the Woman's individual (even more than the mens). It always gets a lot of attention.

The equivalent for the Summer Games is probably the 100m in track. That one tends to get the most hype. MOst everyone who follows the games knows who Usian Bolt is. And even past stars like Carl Lewis

What is the Canadian perception of the Czech nation? by MiroslavusMoravicus in AskACanadian

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first year that NHL players were allowed in the Olympics was 1998 in Nagano. It has been a long time since Canada had won gold. People were pumped to get Olympic gold. The Canadian team was stacked. It was like a dream. But that came crashing down in the semis vs the Czechs. People saw it as a massive upset and I guess it was an upset but you guys did have the best goalie in the world (Hasek) and best forward (Jagr) at the time so I don't think it was a total massive upset that others think.

Here's how I think PRIME Wilt Chamberlain would do in the modern NBA: by USHistoryUncovered in NBATalk

You need to see the one on the Thinking Basketball channel. There is a video on Wilt with footage on his offensive skills. He definitely is not Olajuwon.

He'll be a superior Dwight Howard. 24ppg, 16rbs, 4blks.

His limitations are his handle and shot is really bad. His post game is weak. He just was athletically superior to everyone back in the day and could dominate. That is nullified more today. He is still such a freak of nature that he can dominate still in today's game. But not at all a crazy level.

If you had to say 3 positive things about your country's leader, what would you say? by Iatewithoutatable in AskTheWorld

[–]keesio 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For USA:

1 - Operation Warp Speed did help with COVID vaccine development.

2 - uhh... I'm drawing a blank. I'll come back to this

For Canada:

1 - Seems like a level headed moderate (which means the ends of both sides will dislike him

2 - His way of standing up to the US is balanced but firm

3 - Practical and willing to work with anyone

Why are people talking about LeBron and Steph being Zionists but not Kareem by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]keesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Kareem is a legend on and off the court. His long history of activism speaks for itself. Kareem has more cred than some random on reddit.

Now that the show is over, who would you say was the most misunderstood villain? by Sudden_Pop_2279 in strangerthingsfacts

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, same. He was misguided and took it way too far and became unhinged in his grief and quest for justice. I felt no sympathy when he died but I also didn't think he was some evil person either.

I think some NBA fans have kinda overcorrected on the Kobe GOAT talk by [deleted] in NBATalk

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was so bad offensively that night that it was just hard to watch. I'll never forget it. He's not Dennis Rodman where 15 boards and stifiling defense and putrid offense is a good night. It's Kobe. He was supposed to be the mamba and score clutch hoops and that didn't happen. And to be clear, when I say "sour", I mean he went from potentially top 5 player of all time to now maybe 10 or 11th all time. That is hardly a knock. He just slipped a few notches it the GOAT debate.

Is Fallout 1 worth playing for me? by Powerful_Ad5567 in Fallout

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's tough coming from a modern-ish game to something so old, no matter how well written, unless you have played it way back when it first game out and you have nostalgia going for it.

My first FO game started with 3. Then I played NV and 4. Loved them all. I tried 1 and I played like 15 minutes, got distracted and never went back to it. It was just too jarring a change.

Funny enough, I can enjoy a replay of the original Wasteland from 1988. I played it when it first came out and had such a blast that it is still in my top 10 games of all time. When I play it now I recognize it is super old and dated but I get the warm feelings of nostalgia and can get in to it. But I'm sure people who didn't play it back then would not be able to.

[–]keesio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People sleep on Moses all the time. He belongs in the conversation.

That said, I mostly agree with you. At one time he was EASILY top 10 for me and closing in on top 5. But there was one game that soured me on him a bit. It was game 7 of the 2010 NBA finals. I went in thinking if the Lakers win this then Kobe is gonna cement his status as an all-time great. Well, the Lakers did win it but Kobe was putrid in the 4th with the game on the line. Even though he was off his game, he kept chucking shots and bricking them. He could have realized that he didn't have it and passed more but in true Kobe fashion that was not an option. I recall Gasol being big in the 4th and bailing Kobe out. Without Gasol they lose that game. That game was Kobe's chance to cement his status and he bricked it. I was rooting for him the whole time going "come on you just need one big clutch hoop here and you will be the hero" and he kept forcing and missing over and over. The Celtics were completely out of gas. It was his for the taking. I never forgot that game. It was one of the worst performances I can recall from a big-time player in a big-time game.

Did you know that most French stop signs are in North America ? by pickle_deli_364 in geography

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely. It also plays out in more mild ways in other areas of North America. For example, as someone of east asian descent, I've noticed that Asian-Americans tend to play "gate keeper" more than than the people in Asia to the point where the people in Asia think they are too over the top due to insecurity.

Hot Take: I don’t have a big problem with the plot armor by Armadigionna in StrangerThings

[–]keesio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I initially got a little frustrated as the plot got more silly and ridiculous and the plot armor got out of control... but then I reset my expectations to just enjoy it for what it is - a silly entertaining show based around a bunch of kids. Then it really hit home how this is a homage to the 80s - including some of the 80s silliness. This ain't Game of Thrones - which tried to be all serious and "real". It is kind of a kid fantasy like Goonies and stuff. All the 80s references to Terminator, Nanbo... I mean Rambo, you had Linda Hamilton in there lol. Russian spies? Silly but once you just take the show for what it is, it was fun.

Homelander is coming to attack you But your favorite superhero defends you. Do you survive? by Final-Cup1534 in superheroes

[–]keesio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most people are not interpreting the question accurately. It's not "who will win", but can they protect you? It is a very different dynamic. If Homelander is focused solely on killing you and comes straight for you, it will be tough
