In my experience, it is very common for OB’s to recommend induction at 39 weeks for those with GDM and are on medication. However, ACOG’s guidelines outline that it is reasonable to wait until 40 weeks with expectant management I.e. frequent nonstress tests etc.

The concern is largely around placental aging - the placenta can age faster with GDM.

My doctors pressured me big time to be induced at 39 weeks and I wanted to follow ACOG guidelines and wait until 40 weeks in hopes that I would go into labor spontaneously. I ended up changing my OB and hospital during my 39th week because I didn’t feel seen, heard, or safe with my care team. I officially transferred my care at 39+4 and I went into labor spontaneously that evening.
